IM about to install windows 7 home premium on my hard drive and im not sure weather its worth installing it on a partition. Ive heard it makes your computer a lot faster etc Is it worth it in the long run? Should i install the hardware drivers on the windows partition or on the other half? Im confuzzled!
P.s i know how to make a partition (even if i cant spell it?? lol) but not sure if its worth it or not. thanks for any help you can give :) - Adam :)

P.s 2 what size should it be for winodws 7 64bit home premium

The way its usually done is to have windows + programs in one partition and your personal files, documents etc in the other partition.

The size of the windows partition would be about 1/4 of the total size of the hard drive

I've just installed it on a 1TB Samsung F3 and when installing I only set up a 200GB partition to ensure it was on the first part of the disc, then made the remaining space a partition within windows once the install has finished. It kind of makes sense if you look at the HDTach results of your hard drive, there faster on the outside and making a partition on the outside of your disc for windows ensures its all in the fastest bit of the drive.

Worth it imho.

After installing Windows and a few choice apps I'm using about 90GB of my 200GB system partition so I have plenty tp lay with.

well ive made a partition of 35Gb (looked on the net and this forum and every one suggests that..apart from you too lol >< so now im confused) I was going to install the prgrams on the 2nd partition as i have a lot of games normally installed on my pc/steam. It doesnt seem that much faster tbh.. not like it was slow tobegin with anyway lol so i might just keep it as 35Gb And install programs on the other partition lol thanks for ur help :D

p.s i have a 1tb WD digital hard drive

It doesn't make it any faster at all. Whoever told you that was talking out of their arse.

35GB is also pretty tiny - so I would suggest remembering to install everything away from your OS partition.

If I only had the one 1TB HDD I probably would have given about 100GB to the OS and the rest for data. Though personally I usually use a separate HDD for data in my computers and a smaller HDD just for the OS.

so would i just be in the same postion if i just installed everything on the hard drive without a partition (speed wise/performance) if so i may just reformat it without a partition lol its a pain remembering to put S instead of C when installing things lol

If you want to do it again, give the OS 100GB. That should be more than enough for all your applications and games. In fact, if you move your documents and media to the data partition I can't see it ever reaching that - unless you plan to install every game you have ever owned! :p

...i do plan to install everygame i own :D lol I normally get upto 500GB when all my personal data and games are installed! :(.. I play a lot of online games like wow or Modern warfare etc they all come to about 250Gb of games! ><.. i think i may just go back to no partition. Im sorry to ask and sound like a n00b but is improvment by having a partition noticeable? (i mostly use pc for playing games, music and net)

I have a 50GB partition for Windows 7 64bit and with ALL of my programs installed on that partition it's using up only 16GB. Obviously this depends on what you are going to install. I don't have any games on there, but when I did have games installed I had them on a separate partition again. It just makes it easier if I have to reinstall windows as Steam, for example, would not need to download all the games again.

I always like to keep Windows on a separate partition as it just keeps it more organised.

There is nothing wrong with putting your games on the Data partition too. Though to be honest I always uninstall a game when I am done with it. I don't see the point of leaving it lying around! :p

I keep a 500GB drive for applications and games, although it's getting to the point where I want to move steam as it's filling up the drive quite rapidly.

Lol i see where you are coming from.. but I have NO pateince! :( most of the games i own are on steam or EA download:( my download speed is around 600Kb lol so when i fancy having a quick game on BC2, wow, edge, oblivion, or any games over 5Gb .. it takes a while to download >< so after a new format i normaly just leave it on 2-3 nights downloading the games lol Nothing worse than wanting to play a game and having to wait 9 hours for it to download :( I could backup the .exe files i guess.. Ive just reformatted with no partitions lol ty for all your help anyway :D

and also if i have my personal files (music) it would be such a hassle using my backed up itunes file. Id have to show itunes where every song was i have added to it (as its not on the c drive anymore) -_-
