Hi Everyone

Thinking of buying a Mac for the first time (for personal use). Can anyone tell me why I should? All I know is that they look better than PCs!

Thanks in advance.. :p

Edit: P.S. I would be buying a laptop.

They look nice, they're extemeley well built, they're fast and most importantly the operating system! Lion should be out today also which should make things even better!

Are you looking at a Pro or an Air? iMac owner myself.

if you are a techie get a PC
if you are a non techie get a mac

PC will cost less, but go wrong all the time in a year it will be slow and worth 50% of what you paid for it

MAC will cost more, but never go wrong unless you drop it or spill something on it, in 3 years it will be as fast as the day you brought it and still worth half what you paid for it (so keeps its value better than a pc)

It all depends on what you want to use it for. I switched from Windows to OSX in March when I bought a MBP. I've been very happy, it runs quieter than my old Windows laptop. I bought as I needed to run a lot of VM's and my old laptop was not up to the task. The MBP had the hardware config I wanted so decided to switch and have been very happy.

well I am not a techie. haha@Andi.. I kind of want to be convinced because I'm sick of PCs stuffing up on me all the time..

thanks for replies guys, keep em coming. :)

Just go and try one in an Apple store. If you have to ask or need to be convinced as to why then I wouldn't bother. Stick to Windows.

Er, I call balderdash on that one.

My PC is 2 years old and cost less than an iMac. It is still faster than any iMac currently available and has never gone wrong.

I'm kicking myself because I missed a 27" 2009 iMac for £900 on the refurb store. By the time I decided "yeah I'll go for it" they were gone.

The prices stay the same until a new refresh comes out. And new inventory is added on a daily basis too so just keep checking back.

If you have an iPhone download iRefurbished you can set alerts whenever new Macs meet your criteria are added :)

a sample of one pc and one mac is not an exhaustive survey,

I speak to 15 - 20 people a week about computer problems,

the only mac calls I get are liquid dammage, or dropped machines. My customers who have macs only ever need me to configure their email and some times attach them to their wireless.

never had a 'my mac is slow' my program does not work or i have a virus call from a mac user...

Its a matter of choice...

osx is faster but less compatible. Less likely to get viruses, but not virus free (as many would tell you). Many never have a problem then again I have known plenty of people that have had their system crash/freeze and die on them.

I dont need to tell you the pros and cons of windows, but just for the sake of balance: Its slower, but more compatible. Gets viruses, but there are a multitude of free and very capable programs to help. Again many have problems, many dont....luck of the draw im afraid.

What you do get with apple is very good customer service.....but you pay for this when you buy the item. This is always my bone of contention with apple stuff, the price.....you pay a fortune, often for a weaker system, that said osx is naturally faster so doesnt need the same system......this is why its very hard to compare the two.

How much you looking to spend? basic macbooks for around £500- £600 are the same essentially as a £300-£400 windows laptop....but again this doesnt tell the whole story, osx will probs run faster on this system than windows does on the equivalent.

That said what is personal use? internet browsing? making documents? gaming? all are simple basic tasks on windows....they are not quite so simple on macs....not saying they are impossible, but you will encounter compatibility issues.

Plus check out the new ultrabook ranges from asus and samsung, if you want good looking tech look no further! :D

for a little bit more the samsung series 9 is available and that is as powerful as the best macbook pros yet in a body as beautiful as the macbook air. Then again dell/ asus / HP/ etc do far cheaper and much more powerful laptops than even this, but they are not as thin...

What a fantastically useless post. The OP is asking people with hands on experience what the pros and cons are, he's not asking to be convinced:rolleyes:

Anyway, with regards to the OS, there is very little between OS X and Windows 7 now. Ignore the "OS X is faster, crashes less, doesn't slow down, doesn't get viruses" arguments as these really aren't applicable for most W7 installations.

It really comes down to personal choice. Pay a bit more for the Mac, this will get you excellent customer service and all-round experience. Go for a Windows machine for cheaper hardware (cheaper, not worse) and better compatablity, but forfeit some customer service (dependent on retailer/manufacturer).

No. You are currently just a victim of marketing; you've decided that you want one without even trying one or knowing anything about them.
