My uncle has a 206 1.4 w reg that's got a failed head gasket (2nd time). It was repaired by cowboy garage who then went bust and the head gasket went again a month later.

He's sick of the car and just wants rid of it and will accept £200. How much would you guys say a head gasket would cost from a decent specialist? I need a morre economical car for uni so this could be perfect but I want to make sure it's worth the hassle.

Thanks :)

Headgasket will cost you probably about £300, what's the mileage? Has it been generally looked after? When is it due it's next MOT?

mileage is 102k and yes it's been a family car and well looked after. MOT runs till next april as does the tax. It's blue and 5 door.

And noticed from your post you're in the motor trade Maz, how much do you think I should put my 2004 Leon Cupra FR 1.8t Plat. Grey 94k half leather fsh up for? I know it's hard to guess without seeing it but what region should I be going for? £2k?? £2.5k?

Thank you

Is it really going to be worth it on economy grounds?

The 1.8T is only massively uneconomical if you're just doing inner city driving and if that's all you're doing, surely you're not clocking up much mileage anyway?

I'm not sure i'd want to jump from a 2004 Leon to a 4/5 year older 206 with a tiny engine just to save pittance in fuel.

Is it a Cupra or an FR? It can't be both.

Kenai, I know exactly what you're saying mate. That's the only thing holding me back atm. I can afford to run the Leon but I only really do town driving now as I live near my uni. I know it will be a big step down but I think I will appreciate it in a couple of years when I graduate and can buy a newer Leon Cupra!

I thought the 1.4 gets around 40mpg? Where as mine gets around 28mpg over the last 2K.

Even if I was to buy it and get the head gasket repaired, would it be worth it for the profit?

?profit?

Seat changed it from Leon Cupra 1.8 20vt to Leon Cupra FR 1.8 20vt - the FR basically means it's the facelift with the teardrop wing mirrors etc. It says it on the log book and also the Seat garage reciept where it was bought from new and used. Don't see the point, but still thought I should add the FR to say it was the facelift version. :o

It's just supposed to be a Leon FR I think is the point Maz is making, it wasn't called a Cupra FR. I could be wrong though, wouldn't be the first time :p

Just as a quick comparison, using the UK average of £1.329 for unleaded over 2000 miles at 28mpg vs 40mpg your costs would be £431 vs £302. That's not really a huge amount of money and I guess 2000 miles is probably a few months of use for you. (edit - that's assuming the 206 gets 40 around town, i've no idea if it would, it may get less than you expect)

You'd pull £1000 in capital out of it I expect but do you need it, or will it just get spent on beer? I'd rather tie the £1000 up in having a nicer car personally.

The 206 is a crap car and break down for fun. At over 100,000 miles chances are you fix the head, only for it to either break again 2 months later or another expensive problem occurs.

Personally, I would only take it for £200 if it fully worked.

Sorry I was just looking for it on the used car valuation guides, assuming it's a 1.8T FR on a 54 plate as they didn't do one on a 04 plate according to CAP.

It books at £2250 average, and £2475 clean.

This is a £3495 - £3995 car retail for me, I'd say privately you want to sell it for between £2750 - £3000.

Thanks Kenai, that put it a bit more into perspective. Might keep it now....

Thanks Maz. I was happy with £2500 so will put it up for £2750 if I put it up for sale. Couldn't have chosen a worse time what with xmas coming up!

Thanks for the input everyone :)
