Should I change or not?

Well life really does have a habbit of flipping on it's head when you least expect it...

A few weeks ago, I was offered and accepted a new job. I'm really pleased, as it's a great opportunity, but it will have 2 outcomes which are relevant to motors - a walkable commute (1.5 miles) and increased disposable income.

I'm in 2 minds here, whether I want to let the petrolhead in me back out or do the sensible thing.

The sensible side of me says the Accord is the ideal cheap car for occasional use. The sort of use it's going to get is driving to work when I cant be bothered walking, longer jaunts to visit friends/holidays, the much joked about dog walks and practical stuff like tip runs or trips to ikea. For what it cost me, it does all this stuff well, costs very little to run and the problems are all but ironed out.

But the petrolhead says I should take advantage of greatly reduced mileage to be able to run something more enjoyable.

So what say you, people of motors? Now I've got most of my debts paid off, I wouldnt want to spend what I spent on the Saab, but could circa £3k buy something practical, comfortable but fun?

I'd hang on for a bit - until you are sure the job will work out. I think you've changed cars a lot recently, and while it is always tempting to change up when you can, it's not generally the most sensible option. If you wait a while and the job goes well, you might find you want to increase that budget to £5k and get something even better.

This was pretty much my thinking - give it the 6 months probationary period so I know the job will work out I'll have a better handle on my car use.

Accord Type R. Sorted.

That thought did cross my mind too :)

Ian Ian Ian.

Wait Wait Wait. (a while until things balance out with the new job, should you opt for it)

Why not just see how the new job goes for a few months as PMKeates suggests, if you do enjoy it then decide at that point about whether to get a new car - at the moment it looks rather as if you want to put the cart before the horse so to speak.

Oh dont worry, I'm not jumping into anything straight away, just want to either quash the idea or give myself something to work towards

Once the thought pops in there it will not go away, trust me I know. Buying a sensible car to replace a performance car isnt always a good idea unless there is a massive difference in running costs and there is a large amount of money to be had out of changing down, in some cases inc mine, it just back fires and ends up costing you, or it did with me anyway

Spend 3k plus the accord and get an X Type :)

I didn't want to make any suggestions in my original post, but that was the other idea I had :)

It seems 3k is enough to buy a 3.0 Sport Saloon, maybe in a few months time it might be enough to buy an estate

Buying the Accord wasnt a mistake at all - it has made a huge impact on my outgoings and it was definitely the right choice. However, a new job is going to completely change my car use

Estates start at about 5k at the moment, just had a look.

I think you're missing the point. I'm happy with it in the sense that it does what it was bought to do - it's a tool and nothing else.

But life is changing (new job, in case you missed it) so I'm contemplating whether I can allow the petrolhead back out to play

Keep the Accord for now, then review the situation after you've been working there a while.

Maybe consider a second car as a toy? Maybe an MX-5?
