Should I choose planned LAN Setup A or B, am I missing a C

Here are my 2 planned LAN setups below (Pictures were inspired by 'snowdog')

Setup A ensures the downstairs xbox360 is wired at greater expense.
Need 2 Buy: Router, CAT6 Cables & Pair of homeplugs.

Setup B is the plan if the Router I buy is good enough reguarding wifi.
Need 2 Buy: Router & some CAT6 Cables.

I am thinking of buying the Asus RT-N56U Router, if this is good enough to stream movies to the downstairs xbox360.

Should I ensure I buy a good enough Router and go for option B or could there be anything I am missing in my planned setup?

The vm superhub & 3 x Tivo boxes are being installed next week, would this affect the LAN setup?

If you're getting a Superhub installed wait and see if you need a new router at all. You may find the wireless works well enough. If is does the most you'd need is a much cheaper network switch.

You don't need Cat6 cables in preference to Cat5e cables.

Setup A just appears to be setup B with some Powerline adapters added. Again I'd say wait and see if the wireless will handle it before spending any money.

I forgot to add I have had the old vm modem with their 50mb internet connected to a Belkin N1 wireless router for 4/5 years now.

My pc only connects at mb rather than gb, if I changed the router & cable to gb would that not improve my connection?

My daughters laptop says it's connected @ 300 over wifi

I have noticed a huge drop over the last few months on my wifi range, tried changing channels & it makes no difference, hence the new router/homeplugs idea

I was thinking of changing the router & cables, then seeing what the wifi is like b4 spending any more money on anything else.

Don't know what a network switch is so googling it now :confused:
 
For your Internet speed you don't need Gigabit at all unless you're on their 120Mbps package. Any slower package just isn't fast enough to need anything better than a normal 100Mbps connection.

Gigabit could help on the LAN if you're moving large files about. Looking at your diagram the only area that would see any real benefit would be the connection between the PC and the NAS. For that connection you'd just need a £20 Gigabit network switch.

I will be on their 120mb service when they double up next month.

I am moving lots from pc to nas for streaming ect, so basically I plug my network cable from nas to switch to pc?

Based on what you've just added I'd get the RT-N56U and use it with the Superhub in modem mode (as per your diagram).

The RT-N56U has all Gigabit ports so you won't need a separate Gigabit switch (unless you need more than four ports).

Wait and see on the Powerline adapters, the wireless may be good enough on its own.

Only buy Cat6 cables if they cost about the same as Cat5e versions, you will see zero benefit from Cat6.

All advice taken onboard, will update once superhub & new router installed
