Should i consider an alternative to the Canon S95?

We're needing a new compact and want to make use of Tesco's Clubcard Voucher deal with Jessops, which expires at the end of the month.

I was looking earlier in the year and the S95 seemed to get great recommendations on here. Jessops (high street) are selling for £320 and we have around £150 of Tesco vouchers so all good there.

I don't really want to spend much extra so I think that will put the LX-5 out of the running. Are there others for the same price or less that would be a better buy than the S95?

Just to follow up on the LX5 I've been using it for a couple of days now and I really, really like it. I like it so much that if I wasn't trying to save up I'd buy one for myself to keep in the car. I love the 24mm end and I've been pleasantly surprised with the image quality.

Big thumbs up from me.

Did you get the S95 Kingbal?

Also for those with the LX5, am I right in thinking it has a traditional lense cap? Strange for a point and shoot compact? Is it annoying?

After holding the LX-5 (and XZ-1) in my hands, i decided it was (they were) just too big for my needs, even more so when stored in a case. The lense cap put me off too as it just made the lens protrude even further as well as the ballache of having to manually remove/replace it.

The S95 ticks all the boxes and i'd really happy with it; the size is great and i'll be able to take it out with me a lot more being able to slip it in jeans/jacket pocket.

The build quality is solid and it feels expensive (hell it was) - I've taken a few test pics and the quality is great; i just want to get to grips with the manuals controls now and see how i can improve my pics.

I think the difference in size between the three puts the S95 in it's own category and if that's important to you like me, the S95 is the only choice.

You can get a automatic lens cap for the LX5!

On the S100 note, i'd love it but it's not out till next year!

Also went with the S95 in the end, it is so compact and that was really our main criteria.

Only taken a few shots so far, all inside the house and I am amazed how little it uses the flash on the Auto setting and yet the pictures still come out well lit?!

When the flash is used there is no horrible shadow around the subject which was very much my main complaint with my old TZ5.

Off on holiday next week, very much looking forward to trying the camera out in many different settings and for the first time ever I am determined to read the whole manual!
