Should I get a 1440p monitor or a higher refresh rate monitor?

Recently I've been thinking about upgrading my monitor. My current Samsung S22C300 only has a 60hz refresh rate and is 1080p.

I've read quite a lot that the GTX 1070 is a "sweetspot" for 1440p gaming but really if I have to lose ultra graphics for a higher resolution I don't want to go that way. That's why I'm more inclined to only go for a higher refresh rate Monitor.

So I pose the question, should I get a 1440p monitor or just one with a higher refresh rate than my current one (maybe even a G-Sync monitor)?

Budget wise I don't really want to fork out too much for it but if I have to pay for quality then so be it!

It's all very subjective but for me, I game at 1080p with 120hz and I wouldn't swap my refresh rate for higher res. It's just so much smoother and responsive.

Surely a 1070 will power a 1440p monitor @ 100fps at least?

My 980 gets about 80fps on fairly taxing games like Just Cause 3 and Far Cry 4.

Racing games are well north of 100, 120fps in some cases.

I'd say it depends what games you're playing. If you're playing shooters, racing games and what not I'd go with refresh rate. If you play mostly single player adventure games or whatever, then high refresh rate isn't such a big deal.

Personally, I couldn't give up 144hz for more resolution.

Just got a 1440p monitor today................ just :eek::eek: absolutely stunning! Never going back to 1080!

Performance with MSI 1070 Gaming x with overclock are superb too!

I suppose at the moment 1440p may be pushing for a higher end card, but you'll be keeping the monitor a few years - by that time higher resolution gaming would become the norm. I'm using 1920x1200 but before that it was 1680x1050, so had a slight bump in resolution (but it's a bigger monitor so you have to)

How wide are 27" monitors?

quick search on oc site for 1440 freesync tn & ips results in these two

There's £10 difference between the two. The monitor I'm using now has TN with 5ms grey to grey. I will be gaming, however when playing games like Skyrim, War Thunder etc, excellent colour reproduction is more important than fast response. But then I play FPS too..

I moved from 1080 to 1440 and its a huge improvement for me ..... I only really play eve and the odd world of warships with a bit of BF ...... so don't
need more than 60 fps ....

But you should look at one with G-Sync ??

If money isn't an issue, I'd go for a monitor with both 1440p and 144Hz, had the ROG Swift PG2748Q for over a year now and absolutely love it for gaming

I have a ROG Swift PG278Q...and although I have the monitor set @1080 ( windows are too small otherwise), I play @2560x1400 144Hz and in BF4 settings @Ultra with resolution scale @150 I'm getting a good 150FPS :)

I was all set on ultrawide but couldn't justify the cost, bought a 27" with a view to going ultrawide in the next year or so. The X34A/P look great.
