Should I get a 1440p monitor or a higher refresh rate monitor?

I owned a Samsung S27B970 1440 monitor. However I wanted to see what the fuss is about concerning 144hz and picked up a relatively cheap 27" 1080 144hz Iiyama monitor.

I have to say, 144hz does live up to its hype, there is a very noticeable difference not only in games but Windows. My PC is getting on a bit, I thought that this might squeeze extra performance and tide me over until I upgrade next year (really fancy an Ultrawide set up).

From a visual perspective, 1440 is no doubt better for 27 screens and 'downgrading' resolution does take some getting used to. Like others have said, it is a trade off, personally, I have not felt the need to swap back to the Samsung.

I'm sure glad I found this thread, since getting my 1070 like others on this thread. I have also been thinking about swapping my 23" dell 1080 ultra sharp for a 1440. But I had also looked at 144mhz 27" 1080 monitors as I mostly play FPS games, was hopping spend between £200 to £300. But after seeing AOC AGON AG271QX I'm tempted to spend more and get that.

One thing I have noticed, theirs not a great selection of 1440 monitors with 144mhz panels at reasonable prices.

I would always go for 1440p in preference to higher than 60hz (although both together is of course better). The noticeable difference in frame rates is subtle, the noticeable difference in resolution is night and day.

And it was an expensive lesson, but I'm so glad I broke my x34 because I'm so much happier with 16:9 (and 144Hz, 1440p) even at 27 inches. And the reduction in number of pixels means ultra grass in GTA and solid 144hz at ultra in several games, things not possible with the x34. GTX 1080.

I'm thinking of upping my Samsung 23a700D. It's 1080 with 120hz but my eyes are getting older and I'm finding it hard to see smaller enemies on screen in online shooters etc. Was toying with the idea of bigger monitor with a 27" screen but would run it at 1080 so things are that bit bigger. Would like gsync too to run it on my 1070 but I don't think mt budget would go to those lengths :(

I never considered 1440p since it looks somewhat mediocre compromise to me.

I initially tried 200Hz 1080p UW to give me highest possible temporal clarity, but, alas, no good 1080p 21:9 panels on market yet (they good on paper only). So I went to 4K to give me highest possible spatial clarity instead.

I currently have a U2515H paired with a GTX 980ti but I've been looking to get a 27" monitor running at 144hz. I mostly play games on it, from FPS to WoW/adventure games. I do like my screen but I'm noticing more screen tearing in games now.

However, my eyesight is not the best anymore and the 1440p I use now looks small so if I upgrade to a 27" 1440p I assume it will look even smaller? If that's the case, would going for a 27" 144hz 1080p monitor be better for me? I'll be keeping my GPU for a while now (unless my balls drop in the lottery :) ).
