Should I get a MacBook Pro?

A couple of months ago my laptop died after over five years of loyal service. I have been saving up for a replacement since and I am now on the verge of being able to get it.

I will be using this laptop for pro audio applications (namely Cakewalk - Sonar 8) and so a beefy CPU and plenty of RAM is vital. I was considering getting a laptop from Dell (See here for the specification). But after eyeing up a 15" MacBook Pro with similar specifications (2.8Ghz Core2Duo, 4Gb RAM) I am having second thoughts. I have always admired Macs from a design standpoint, they seem well built and reliable. If I were to get one I would be sticking Windows XP on it and using that as the sole operating system (before you take gasps of horror at the thought, I really have no need to use OSX for any of my work). I have seen that I can use Bootcamp drivers to get all the hardware working.

Taking the above into consideration, would you say I would be doing the right thing getting a MacBook? Or should I get the Dell. Thank you for your input!

Only joking. Honestly laptops like lenovos are just as well built if not better than apples, come with more windows features and will be cheaper for the price. Your better off not with the apple. You will get annoyed by the lack off eject button for example

If you use your computer a lot and like the MBP then why not? It's powerful and very well built.

I'd write a car analogy about the MBP vs. DELL regarding weighing up price, looks and performance but I'm sure everyone can fill in the blanks :)

look at the new HP 16" laptop it's the nuts and much better priced than an MBP, I own an MBP and although very good i couldn't recommend the current generation as tbh I think there poor value for money

Sonar can only be run on Windows IIRC, if you're mainly using that and running Windows then what's the point in spending it on a Mac?

Why go to the expense of getting a MBP and then remove OSX? OSX is the best part about macs. It is streets ahead of windows. If you remove it and use windows then you are just paying for expensive hardware.

Personally I wouldn't of bought a MBP if I could put osx on a dell/sony laptop.

Get the Dell.

Dell TBH.

OS X is pretty much the main reason to spend more on apple hardware.

The rest comes from the design/size/lightness/nice to use keyboard side of things

Just looking at the spec of your Precision, I'd just suggest the upgrade to a WUXGA screen.

Aside from that, very nice.

Thank you all for your feedback, it seems like a pretty unanimous decision that the Dell is the one to go for. @ Bonjour, adding a WUXGA screen isn't a bad shout now you mention it, I'll update my spec and get it ordered soon :)
