Sorry to break this out of the MG thread but I wanted to get some wider input on this.

I'm in the market for a late, low mileage MG TF 160, if you think that's a crap choice or otherwise then feel free to post in my other thread :p

However the 2 cars I have come across so far that fit the spec are both in a special edition monogram paint scheme. I know without seeing them in the flesh it's very hard to telll what they look like but in general what do people think abut this ?

Pro's for me are rarity, looks special and stands out etc etc, poss hold value better ?

Cons - colour could be marmite and affect future value ? Cost of paint could be prohibitive for future repairs or even if I wanted to get a colour coded hard top etc..

What you reckon ? Here's one I'm looking at in 'Bittersweet' a flip colour of Green/Blue/Gold by all accounts..

And here's one in 'Shot Silk' which is a flip green / purple..

I hope you dont ever have to touch up or repaint any panels on that colour of car , bet that would cost a few quid.

That's my biggest worry tbh, I saw a post somewhere on one of the MG forums where a guy had been quoted £1,500 a litre for the shot silk paint !

Surely it would be possible to get some made up for cheaper than that ?

The car will be harder to sell as the colours may not be to everyone's taste. Touch-ups will be hell as if any panel needs repainting it will not match. Lastly the colours don't even suit them.

Don't do it.

How often have you had paintwork on a car, and will you have the car long enough to bother having this paint work done.

Surely accidental damage will be handled by insurers anyway?

Stone chips are part and parcel of owning a car and many many people don't bother correcting them before re-sale no matter that the colour of the car. They probably have a few already.

This is true, but the cost of the paint means that if some little scroat keys the whole car and it requires a whole repaint the insurers may write the car off as the paint is so expensive.

I can see it making the car harder to sell on because the colours are so "marmite".

I really really like the first colour combo, the 2nd one is the one a lot of chavs tend to get done. The first one looks a bit more grown up. I don't it takes anything away from the car or the image. If you like it, go for it.

Maybe you could haggle the seller with costs of touch ups, get a bargain and then forget about re-sale woes.

That was a factory option on those cars? I just thought that there were a few chavs with too much money around who had chosen to barry up their Rovers with flip paint.

Be prepared for people like me to think that you have chosen to waste money on barrying up a Rover by painting it with flip paint. If this bothers you then don't get that car.

Personally I wouldn't get that car anyway, though I have to admit the green&yellow one looks allright, much better than the usual green/brown/purple you see.

I guess that's the problem isn't it - I kind of prefer the look of the second one as I think it looks a bit more 'grown up' it's all down to individual taste and tbh I don't mind that aspect of it as it'll all be down to whether I like it or not when I see it in the flesh..

It's more the practicality's and ongoing cost of it I suppose I'm baulking at..

Is the colour really that expensive? Seem to recall seeing a Nissan Primera or something similar with that sort of scheme and didn't/don't Alfa have a light blue that changes colour?

My MGZR was typhoon (blue/purple flip) and I'd never have one again. The paintwork was always a constant worry whenever I parked anywhere and it got far too much attention for my liking, everywhere you go people stared and pointed.

The price of paint over the last few years has sky rocketed, I will check with the old man to see how much a litre costs tonight. A respray for a std car is around 3/4k all in, with the flip paint you are looking at least double that. I believe the Monogram paint was a 3k optional extra which gives you some idea of the cost.
