Should I get a Ps3??

Hi, I currently have an xbox 360 which I use every so often and a pc which I game on. I did once have a ps3 circa uncharted and resistance fall of man 1 and didn't realy like the selection of games availiable at the time, so I sold it and brought my current 360 (I had one previous to the ps3 but it rrod on me, grrr).

Anyway my little brother who lives with my dad now has a ps3 (he's 10) and is banging on about me getting one so we can play online together (he absolutely smashes me on any game I play him at!! I'm 23 and have played games since his age, what are they teaching them at school!!) this has got me wanting to get a ps3 for the social reasons and not having to drive to my dads to speak to him.

Another reason is the fact I could probably retire my aginge samsung bluray player to my bedroom and use the ps3 as the main player, which leads me to the question of, are they still any good at playing blurays, I know they are updateable but so is my sammy.

Basicaly I'm unsure, what decent games are on the ps3 (this new found interest is partialy fueled by GT5 being released soon ish)? Can someone give me some pros and cons? Is online play still free??

Many thanks guys :)

I wouldn't bother enless you got the cash to blow, I borrowed my mates PS3 not long ago for 3 weeks, played it like 3 times. The only game that is good is Fifa, if you play PC games you will be crap/think the fps games are rubbish.

I think they are pretty good for playing blu ray discs but you can't even store a blu ray movie file on it as the disc it's only FAT32 compatible I believe.

Plus online gaming on a ps3 is rubbish compared with PC/Xbox. I wouldnt buy it just to play your little brother a coupla times.

I nearly ditched my PS3 a few months back, but found all I needed to do was find a use for it…

Basically a PS3 is a damn fine blu ray player. Its also a very good media player, even more so if you connect to a PC using PS3 MediaServer and play MKV files… If using the optical out to a AV amp or HDMI to a AV amp etc, the playback from MKV with DTS encoded or blu ray is exceptional..

As for games, the PS3 has some good exclusives – if you’re picky… Heavy Rain is decent enough, but PS3 does have a good selection of PSN games, such as wipeout HD with the fury pack and zen pinball etc…

I’m glad I stuck with my PS3, and the move kits coming out soon do seem like a good idea, me and gf are actually thinking of move, as she likes the idea of moving around when playing a game… reason she likes the Wii so much..

Also, blu ray playback with the media remote (you can get a PS3 bluetooth remote) makes the whole experience more authenticate… lol

Oh, and the PS3 does have six axis, Zen Pinball uses it, GTA uses it and try WipeoutHD with motion axis steering, quite tricky and kinda gimmicky and good for a laugh.

PS3 also has a free online network… PS3 is a decent machine, you just need to find a use for it, if you buy one..

PS3 had its flaws to begin with.. DS pad no rumble, ingame XMB, no trophies etc... Sony have addressed much of this, so the console has matured a bit now, and its quite a decent machine, as said once you find a use for it.

Oh and get one with the smallest HDD at the cheapest price, and then if more storage is needed, find a cheap as chips, largest laptop SATA drive you can find and slap that in instead..

PS3 can store up to a 16GB file I thought... Its only external drives that need to be Fat32.

Online isn't rubbish, and its free.

And COD 4 MW on the PS3 might have been a tad lower in res then an xbox360 and a lot lower then some high powered PC's etc, but the game played just as good.. Well for a console FPS, and we're not talking about a keyboard and mouse gaming session, this is all about chilling out, on the sofa with a pad enjoying the game for what it is...

Anyhow, PS3 has games the PC will never see... Don't limit the options, if you game nice to have all options covered... :)

I've learnt that recently.... Pleased I did too.

It doesnt sound like you use the X360 that often so seems a bad idea to get another console to sit beside it. If you are into PC gaming but after a console then Id recommend a PS3 just because all its exclusives remain as such.

The online service is more than adequate and at least you wouldnt have to keep a sub going whenever you wanna play your bro - its still a superb BD/media player...

The fact that you played on it only 3 times has nothing to do with the PS3 but the selection of games you had at the time. Fifa is also available on the Xbox..
Blu ray works perfectly for me.
How is the online rubbish? I play both on the PS3 and the Xbox and I don't notice much (if any) difference.

It all depends if you want the exclusive games or not. I got both and play with my little brother too on the PS3. I prefer playing the PS3 but keep using the Xbox for exclusives or games that are absolutely terrible on the PS3 (like Bayonetta). Online play being free is a major plus for me.

If you need a new Blu Ray anyway and got the money for it you might as well IMO :)

just bought one last week to acompany the 360, yes they are pretty pricey and if you already have a 360 their may not be all that much to tempt you being that most 3rd party games seem a little better on the 360.

I have to say though that the PS3 exclusives ive played so far are equaly as impressive if not more so than the 360's AAA titles, uncharted 2, heavy rain and LBP really do stand out, ooze class and feel that little bit superior to most games i own on the xbox.

If you have the cash to spare i'd grab one, i have certainly not been dissapointed with my purchase.

dont think much of the PS3 controller though..

I do still play the xbox just not as much as I used to, my pc is in need of a GC upgrade but is still good enough for BC2 etc... I have been interested in ps3 for mafia 2 since it's nigh on impossible to drive using a keyboard an mouse (obviously not the only reason lol mw2 and gt5 are also very tempting, as are the uncharted games)

I had not thought of the media server side of things, I assume I can stream stuff off of my pc? I know my xbox can be used as a media centre as well.

What's the web browser like? I can't remeber from when I last used it, painful with a controler I expect? (could be useful when my gf decides she needs a marathon facebook/ASOS session on my pc)

If you intend to use facebook on the PS3 browser then get a BT keyboard too - trying to use any gamepad to type is mental...

Nooooo I won't be using it for facebook, I will be using it for browsing only, she uses the pc for facebook etc... Even though she can use her phone for stuff like that she prefers the pc (awkward cow! Women and the internets eh ;) ) I know from sending messages on the xbox the pain of trying to write with a pad!

Is the ps3 any good for basic browsing? Forums etc..

Yeah its fine, but hasnt got the latest flash - I used to use it a lot to watch TVCatchup and iPlayer - surfing these forums is pretty good and with the zoom abilities the text is more than easy to read...

So, there you go then…

Free online
BBC iplayer
Blu ray playback
Media playback from a connected PC or direct from a HDD for support media type
Internet with a blue tooth keyboard (do recommend a blue tooth keyboard)

And…. Hey, maybe some gaming. After all it is a games console.. lol Just hope you don't end up like me, buy one, forget about it for nearly a year and then decide to sell it but give it one more go and realise its not actually too bad a games console after all... Just a shame PC and xbox360 games aren't as sharp on the PS3 at times... PS3 exclusives, now we're talking. Good reason to own a PS3...

Xbox live is better, as for the online fifa - everyone turns off there console when you beat them.

Xbox live is better yes....But that doesnt make PSN rubbish in comparison? It's lacking 1 or 2 features, thats it.

Ps3 is a good console with plenty of PS3 only games available that make it worth the purchase, I guess that's my view though, As i dont know what games you enjoy :p unchartererered 1 and 2 are both great games, MGS4, GOW3 all great. I can name a lot more but i dont fancy realing a long list off :p

The media capabilities of the console are better than that of the 360 also, with regards to being able to store media locally and being able to play bluray. if you're streaming to the console obviously you're going to get the same results as you would with 360, but with no doubt a quieter console running.

Iplayer and the web browser are other bonuses, Iplayer is really decent on PS3, And its a perk the girlfriend makes a lot of use of.

I dont like saying get 1 over the other any more, As different people want different games. Which is always the key selling point, But I will ALWAYS tell people to own both consoles if given the opportunity as they compliment each other really well.

Ignore him, PSN is fine only thing it really misses is cross-game chat
But then it is free to play games online, on dedicated servers in many cases so hardly the end of the world in perspective.

It also means you CAN leave it on the shelf play it whenever you like without wasting money on live subscriptions

However if you are replacing your bluray player then it is a pretty good alternative, I would get a slim though as they are a lot less intrusive

Personally i seem to go through stages of playing each console depending on the releases so I wouldn't go and sell up your xbox as many do to buy it. At the moment i haven't turned on my xbox in months but I am sure if the right game comes out that may change :)
