Should I get an Ipad?

No they couldn't drm doesn't work that way, besides drm is free from iTunes, so the bt module lock down was the only real way.

I don't need a bumper either, funny that huh.

Utter BS!
Thats nothing more than brainwashing which the fanboys love!
This is from the same people that gave us copy & paste in 2009.

No flash on a 2010 device!! FFS! Get with the times Apple!

Same people bringing the same arguments to these threads...

I have no doubt it's written to justify their choice, but you have to admit they are fairly valid?

Also, I'll be honest- I haven't ONCE noticed the lack of flash on my iPhone or iPad. Not to say people won't/don't, but on a personal level it doesn't effect me at all.

Not really, no, it's reminiscent of a guy thats got a few quid to spend, doesn't want to upgrade his pc and was thinking about buying some new tech; namely an Ipad

To me its the equivilant of looking at a few reviews before buying any bit of kit, except I was asking in an apple forum where I was pretty sure a few people had Ipads and probably a good few were in my situation when deciding to purchase.

If it was "must have" I would have not asked the forum, I would have bought one without the pearls of knowlege available in here ;)

Just to clarify, I wasn't at any point asking somebody else to make a decision for me, I am quite capable of doing that myself. However contributions to the thread could well sway me into or away from purchasing the device.

Out of interest... what sort of battery times are people getting from the non 3g models?

Nope, sorry but having gone back and read your original post again I'm now more certain than ever that what I said is an accurate assessment (an outsiders point of view). Perhaps you should revist your original post. Don't worry we've all been there but most of us recognise the fact and hopefully can put our hand up.

Well.... I went and done a bit of shopping today and one of the things I carried home is a new Ipad. I am still yet to set it up but will get on with that a bit later. I just thought I would update the thread, not that anybody really had any bearing on my purchace but as some have said hopefully I will find some good use for it :) If not it will be on the Members market next month :o

Guys, Flash works on Android devices just fine.

Let this guy enlighten you:

That guy in the video says it all. *** the guy in the video says far too much, do not post links to videos with lots of swearing ***

And please don't say Apple are ahead of the times!

Heres one example:
They wount even let my iPad communicate with my iPhone or let them communicate with my PC via BlueTooth even though they both got bluetooth. But Apple in their wisdom only allows them to communicate with headsets.

My 7yr old Nokia communicates with other phones and my PC just fine over bluetooth.

Is that technological advancement?

I have to agree with the Bluetooth crippling.
I need to "dial into pc's"
ie: I connect my pc to mobile phone via blutooth and use it as a modem to communicate with the the other pc. Can't do it with either the iPhone or BB.
I have to keep removing the sim card and putting it in a Nokia 6300.
Not a ipad specific problem, but still utter madness.

Why do people think that lack of Flash is a bad thing?

There's been less need for it these days. The upcoming HTML5 standard means that you no longer need it to play videos, CSS3 and JavaScript means you can do fancy animations, and games well....there's the App Store for that.

So what advantages does Flash have left? None.

I run into a few problems, but nothing what would make me not buy an ipad in the first place. Got frash installed now anyway to see if that helps if I need flash

Well the BBC use Flash. Even the BBC New app uses flash for its videos

There are SOOOOO many coporate websites that are flash based its not even funny. Ford, Ferrari, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Lamborghini, Porsche, and Volkswagen all use flash on their main sites. Also, sites like Gatorade and Nike use flash for like 90% of everything.

Diesel, Next, Topman all use flash. Majority of the online fashion retailers use flash for zoom, pan on clothing etc.

Kids sites like Disney use Flash to engage with children.

Even Youtube the so called paragon of HTML5 video is going to be reluctant to switch for a while as HTML5 video lacks embedded advertising (a huge chunk of youtubes revenue source). Lets face it embedded flash video players are a large, possibly the most significant portion of what flash is useful for right now. Trying to claim that HTML5 will make things better is a joke though. I'll grant you that in the future we'll probably be using HTML5 for all our embedded video.

Until HTML5 is adopted fully flash still is the standard.

This is the present. Right now flash is relevant whether you like it or not. By the time it is irrelevant the devices that don't support it will be irrelevant too.

And some say the main reason flash was left off. Why allow users access to free games when you can sell them apps instead

Because you can give them away free as apps too?

Flash is only good for 4 things:

Adverts
Games
Video
Interactive content

I'm not even going to go into Adverts

Games are far far better tailored to the iPad interface and run as a native app rather than trying to fudge together something designed for a computer with a mouse, right clicking, dragging, mouseover, phyiscal keyboard etc.

Videos are far better off being put into h264 format and wrapped with HTML5 rather than the propriatory flv and a flash player. Also youtube has a really slick app anyway.

if Interactive content is written properly it should fall back to HTML/JS. Also many websites are becoming less lazy and updating their sites with more modern technologies. This is becoming less of a problem as websites catch on but for me would be the only reason I might install flash.

I agree. It occurred to me the other day that even if Apple put Flash on my iPhone, I'd probably turn it off. YouTube videos I can watch anyway, and the proportion of Flash content which would actually be useful on a touchscreen would be far outweighed by the annoyance of Flash adverts wasting the device's limited battery and CPU.

Yup. What's more, a lot of corporate sites do with Flash what could be done just as well with JS. The Ford and Audi sites posted above are a perfect example. Both use Flash for what's basically an image carousel. Easy as pie with jQuery.

When I arrive at a site that's entirely Flash, I normally reach for the 'back' button straight away. Slow loading times, irritating music and poor navigation is the norm on Flash sites.

You can't in a million years deny that Flash Video uses far, far FAR too much CPU time. CPU time requires battery, what annoys people more, the stupidly low battery life playing flash or the ability to play flash?

I've had an iPhone for 2.5 years now and not once have I gone 'FFS Apple, give me flash'.

Flash Video has had it's day, why we need a sodding wrapper around perfectly good efficient video codecs like MPEG4 and H264 I really do not know!!

Jailbreak your phone and install the flash add-ons from Cydia if it really bothers you that much, but I suspect many people won't even bother!!!

Edit: I can see it having more of a use on an iPad, but then again, it wouldn't bother me when I get one!

That chart shows Safari performing a lot better and I'm sure that would save a healthy amount of battery life. Plus once Flash is on there, its not only used for videos, so you're wasting battery life on adverts that are pointless and no one ever uses.

Two points here, the first being that just because Flash is available it doesn't mean anyone has to install it, thus it existing for the iPad isn't really a bad thing. Secondly, you can set Flash to only enable Flash elements on demand. That means every Flash element on the page is disabled until you tap it (to instruct Flash to render that object). No annoying adverts, you only get the video/game/whatever that you wanted.

It should also be noted that if HTML5 does replace Flash it'll mean HTML5 ads replace Flash ads. I'm not so sure that's a good thing. Lower resources? Maybe. However it won't be so easy to turn them off. You can choose not to install Flash. You can choose to toggle Flash. The only weapon against HTML5 is going to be 3rd-party browser plug-ins, and they ain't gonna happen on iOS without a Jailbreak.

I'd be interested to see someone replicate this test;

http://vimeo.com/10553088

It's from a while back and it was done by an Adobe employee so it's maybe not 100% legit but it'd be cool if some people packing Froyo (or iPads running Frash) could test it out.
