Should I get portal 1?

I thought portal 1 was harder. Both games have a fair bit of "these are the mechanics and here's a simple puzzle to show them off" before they get to the harder stuff, with less mechanics in the first one, some of the puzzles are cleverer.

There's also stuff like using momentum and timing jumping between platforms etc, much harder than the portal 2 puzzles which can require thinking, but no timing etc.

valve did a great job with portal 1. I played it through upteen times and have yet to get portal 2 for fear that it just won't be as good an experience as 1 and I don't want to ruin that

Never understood the hype on that game, 1 was entertaining but very short. 2 was just more of the same and I've never managed to bring myself to complete it. One day I'll have to force myself through it no doubt.

Yeah definitely, when I was playing P2 on some puzzles I was thinking they would be like P1 and would need some sort of crazy combos (shooting off portals and chaining them together to build up speed etc. Turned out I was approaching them 'wrong' and just needed to figure out the solution instead.

That said there was one section that needed good timing, where there was some of the white goo that you had to get out of this pen in the middle and spray it around the place then chain a few portal jumps together to get enough height to reach a high platform.
 
Portal and Portal 2 are Valve's best games since Half Life 1.

Portal 2 particularly is drenched in the magnificent atmosphere of isolation so well evoked in Half Life 1, to the point at which I consider both Portal games truer to the original spirit of Half Life than HL2 is.

HL2 is a great game but I found it massively disappointing in terms of atmosphere, it was more a grubby 1984 style than the glossy, near future style that HL1 inspired for me, thankfully all the atmosphere and pacing I missed from HL2 is fully present in the Portal series.
