Should I get rid of my minidiscs?

I paid £200 for one about 6/7 years ago, still have it and its mint. What a waste, it'll be on the antique roadshow when i die.

I still have the very first Sony MZ1 portable that cost me £500. Its about 6 inches square.
It was absolutely amazing though. I was playing in a duo at the time and we used backing tracks on cassette which was horrible to use. We bought the MZ1 and it was like choosing tracks on a CD and all our set could fit on 1.5 mini disks.

paint them obscure colours and stick them to a white jacket and say your hardcore nu rave...

or bay them

Minidisc got quite popular in 2000-2001 but then the eye-pid starting catching on.

I still have a top of the range Sony MD walkman tucked away in a drawer - it was worth £350 when I bought it. Now I'd probably have to pay someone to take it off me :(

I had a Panasonic Portable MD recorder not so long ago, sold it to my sister because I used it 6 times in total I think. She used it a lot, wonder what happened to it ? Was a very nice peice of kit really.

Back in the day when I was dj'ing, I'd record my mixes to minidisc, as I had a hi-fi system which had a drive integrated. A few years later I got an audio CD writer. Needless to say, I have half a dozen or so minidiscs in my draw which are fairly useless except for when I dig out my old hifi and slam them in to listen to my old recordings. An intriguing format which had its niche back in the day.

Minidiscs are still the chosen format of the solo vocalist. Mp3's are no good over a big PA.

If I ever go back to solo or duo work what if you used uncompressed music from an MP3 player?
Have you tried that?
Or is it the playback capabilities of the MP3 players that are poor compared to a proper hifi Mini Disk player?

It's the compression that's the problem.

As for mp3 players, I've never fancied trying to push tiny little buttons on a tiny little device which can fall on the floor, when I'm on a dark stage.

With a minidisc deck you just turn the dirty great dial, the track name comes up in bloody great LED's, and you push play. I've seen "turns" jogging their next track from an ipod and to be honest it looks ridiculous and cheap.

I still have my Sony MZ-R91. Apparently it was the smallest and lightest in the world at the time, not much bigger than the MD itself. It was £250. Not used it in years. Fantastic bit of kit though!

I have to say, sadly, that MP3's are not only easier but sound better too. You can use a higher bit rate but with MD you can't.

I use FLAC for most of my music now though. Generally don't listen to music on the go anymore, but when I do I just use my phone (SE W800i) with some medium quality MP3's.
