Hi all,

I am thinking of buying a new hdd as an expansion to my current system (only got 40Gb at the moment).

My motherboard doesn't support SATA, but I was wondering whether it would be worthwhile buying a SATA hdd anyway, and getting a SATA to IDE converter (if there is such a thing).

This way, when I replace my mobo or system, I can simply migrate my hdd straight to new mobo SATA port.

There are such things as SATA-IDE convertors, Abit Serielle is one such and it is an option, I don't know what the performance is like or how secure it is but I can't see it being a problem.

Those are for the other way around, IDE drives on sata motherboard ports.

They work perfectly, but they add an inch or so extra onto the back of the drive, so it can can be a tight fit depend on your case.

I wouldn't bother with these PATA to SATA converters. You won't get a noticeable improvement in performance. You'll just add more unnecessary hardware to your system.

I've used the Abit Serrilel2 adaptor but it cluttered up my case and occasionally fell off. I dumped mine as an unwanted kludge. I don't think you'll gain much in terms of futureproofing your system. Hard drives are very cheap so the proportion of their cost to the price of a future upgrade is actually rather minimal when compared to your graphics card, memory and CPU.
