Should i get Vista?

Personally I like Vista. I get the same performance as XP and I have no driver issues. Also when I change hardware I know that it will run on Vista (as I won't be changing hardware for a couple of months).

Everytime theres a new O/S you will get people saying 'stick with x' however the reality of it is that most people will move to the new operating system soon mainly to play the latest vista only games and to enjoy the new software on there and new features of Vista. Also the support for the older operating systems will slowly filter down with more emphasis put on Vista.

For £61 or whatever it is you can't go wrong. As you've said it's a Friday night out.

by about 3fps and that wont be for long.

LOL what a pointless comment. EVERY system/graphics card will be different. My nvidia 7950GX2 is easily giving me double the frames per second in XP. Probably the drivers, but still, nowhere near 3fps difference.

Support for XP will not fully discontinue until 2014. Seriously, there's no rush in getting Vista whatsoever if your XP system is working fine.

nowt yet... but crisis is already pre ordered and thats DX10 is it not?

i dop know it will work in DX9.c but surley it would be better to use the new tech'

There are a few developers at the moment trying to come up with a Cross Platform Framework for DX10 via OpenGL.

Wether this will work I suppose only time will tell.

For me, Vista is faster, has a nicer GUI (the whole thing is just nicer to use - which is important for me, as I use a computer a lot).

It is also more stable.

Now, before I get doomsday'd (raining skies of fire) I mean not in the sense that it is as bug-fixed as XP (XP has been bug fixed for many years now) but more reliable in the sense that I can put it into and out of hibernate for weeks on end rather than shutting down and starting up again - that is, without the need to reboot to "clean things up". It does not grind itself to a halt by keeping a load of unnecessary junk in memory or keep hundreds of unused svhost threads alive, etc.

In general, Vista is cleaner in this respect. It is also cleaner in the sense that it appears to clean up properly after itself with regard to hardware changes and profiles - i.e. no reformatting once a year or two for a 'spring clean'.

I am also a fan of Vista Media Centre - it is very easy to use, looks good and is quite snappy. It had no problems talking to my Haupauge.

A feature called shadow-copy (in Vista Business, Enterprise and Ultimate) is a life saver for me. It unobtrusively keeps copies of my work after each change and you can roll back these changes (at the moment I have it keeping 5 copies). It does this using very few resources because it only saves the differences between files, which I think is quite neat.

Just my two pence!

why bother asking others? ask yourself. do i really want or need vista. if you can't think of a reason then don't get it. it's only worth getting if you really want it. :)

Yes get Vista 64 prem.
As long as your hardware is detected right & have needed drivers then im sure you wont be sorry.

Hi All,

Just wondering, as i haven't really had much of a play with vista, would it be worth it for my new system? (look @ sig)

OC are preftty ******* cheap at about £61 (pc world...*spit spit* is £119)

I take it directX10 is a vista only thing.

Cheers for any advice

Neal

Which version is it you are considering buying for £61?
Just remember if it is OEM then should you upgrade your motherboard in the future you will need to legally buy a new license.
I'm assuming the more expensive version you've seen in store will be the Retail version which you can transfer from machine to machine.
So twice as much yes, however ultimately a lot more flexible with regards the license.

I have Vista Home Premium and i really do like it, i think its fantastic to be honest. No problems what so ever.

Though this does not mean that you will not have problems.

If you dont particular need any features of Vista yet, i wouldent worry about purchasing it. :)

I've got Vista on my laptop and am actually really impressed with it.

Despite the low spec (only 512mb RAM) and low system rating (2.0) it runs really well and multi-tasking is awesome.

I use this machine for web design and graphics editing and it's nice and quick... even with several large applications open at once.

On XP, it would be dog slow and really bog down. Doesn't take long to boot up and the Aero interface is very cool.

hmmm opened a can of worms so to speak! lol some say yes, some say no... some say maybe... :D

I'll pick a copy up, (OEM) version, as I dont intend to replace anything in my system for a few years so im sure i can cope with the liscence limitations.

Got to try to see if you like....

When i first bought my new rig about 2 months ago Vista 64 was horrible for me, XP is a lot faster at everything in general for me, I plan on installing Vista only when i buy a DX10 Game most probably Bioshock.

Although as you say it is cheap and your need it in the future so no reason not to buy it.

Have best of both worlds

Dual boot and have both, i am currently running both xp 32bit and Vista 64bit.

Besides if you intend to go above 2 gb of ram in the future Vista 64 is the only way to go. :)

I have tried both Vista Home Premium 32bit and 64 bit and found both gave worse performance than XP. I'm currently dual booting XP and Vista 64bit but the latter is only there waiting for some DX10 gaming (basically Crysis!).

Personally I wouldn't bother at the moment, I just ran into too many compatibility issues which outweighed the new features which I found of little use once I got past the pretty interface.

Performance is great on my Vista x64,few things I did was disabled System Restore(since I have everything backed up anyway ) and Windows Defender real time scan, plus also Vista's auto Defragger, now my HD is idle most times,I do have Defender set to scan once everyday.

I'm using O&O defragger so prefer to use that and defrag Vista when I want to.

I have had no driver or software problems, all solid in that department :).

well I bought it, and installed it with no problems at all... I had 2 driver issues, but they were soon sorted with a quick downlaod!

It loosk nice with this new aero interface, so i'll give it a good test this week see if i like it or not.

I'm trying out Vista at the moment. For usual Windows stuff it seems fine. For HTPC the superfetch also. But for gaming I would still choose XP.

Unless you can show with latest drivers (ATI 7.7) every single game has identical framerate.

My HTPC has XP MCE, only because ATI X300 in that has problems with Vista, drivers work but video/audio is out of sync. In XP it's fine.
