Should i go to A&E?

Call 111 and ask for a perscription for a daily dose of "Alpha", should help out future injuries.

Seriously though, do 111 or go to A&E.

checking this helpful chart - is it a life threatening emergency?

nope - OP has hurt his foot....

Maybe A&E should adopt the US terminology and simply be called ER/Emergency Room

no, GD told him to go to A&E

if there is one available nearby then he should be going to a minor injuries unit as it isn't an emergency

But it is an accident, and since the A&E is close by and we've no idea if there is a walk in centre close by, it was the correct advice imo (and my ex is an A&E nurse - so I know about innappropriate admissions :p)

And 111 would 90% of the time say go to A&E anyway, something else she always used to moan about.

edit : Ok, seeing your chart, no it's not classed as life threatening, but I wasn't aware that is supposedly the criteria for visiting A&E....

Well there are numerous campaigns out there telling people to stop going to A&E and/or to phone 111. If there is a minor injuries unit locally then OP would likely be advised to use it.
I mean lots of things are 'accidents'... you could accidentally spill boiling oil onto your arm when cooking and require a bandage, you could give yourself a nasty cut when doing some DIY and require a few stitches... just saying 'oh its an accident' isn't necessarily a reason to assume A&E is the best place if a minor injuries unit is available... which the OP would find out if he dialed 111 and asked them instead of asking GD :p

(sure I've got no doubt that they're not going to be frustrated with him like they'll be frustrated with the chav mum who brings in her kid with a cold because she didn't go to the GP early enough or the smack head with 'issues' who doesn't know what he wants but has decided to kick off in the waiting area... tis also presumably a quiet time of day)

Give 111 a call first, they'll probably tell you to go to a walk in clinic or a&e. At least then your conscious will be clear and you can say you were sent there. I've been to our local walk in centre twice, last time was when my other half slipped with a knife and was badly cut on my 30th birthday, Saturday afternoon, glorious weather outside no less, (selfish cow :D)

I was really annoyed when I over heard some chavvy family talking about how long they had to wait when all their daughter wanted was a prescription for her contraceptives that apparently couldn't wait until Monday

Wjust saying 'oh its an accident' isn't necessarily a reason to assume A&E is the best place if a minor injuries unit is available... which the OP would find out if he dialed 111 and asked them instead of asking GD :p

True, it's just I live in a very rural area and forget other people have things like......facilities :D

I feel your pain, or at least did a few years ago, had to walk around like a penguin for a week. Heel injuries are not nice. It's probably nothing serious and just needs time to heal. I'd go to the docs if it was me rather than A&E. You'll probably get some sweet pain killers and a sick note and get to sit around watching daytime Tv all week, enjoy :).

OP's problem is probably (potentially) more serious than 90% of people in A&E. Sad truth is, people go there if they've got a sore throat or a headache.

At least they do round here.

Doesnt matter though, as long as there are the other 10% there, he wont get seen to for a long while. Its all on priority and after that it is by que but as long as there are people who have a higher priority than OP come in, he wont be seen to.

I was there a few weeks ago when my gf got electrocuted on the christmas tree lights and suffered from muscle spasms. Normally this is not A&E worthy but she felt the pain in both arms and across her chest, so arrhythmia was a concern. Came in at 19:00 with 17 people in line as the emergency was not considered a priority over others. 5 hours later and we were still 17th in line because more emergencies came in. In the end, her mother who is a private A&E nurse drove over after her shift and borrowed their equipment to do the tests herself, since she trained many nurses there and was still registered at this hospital. The 17 people in front of us were not in more serious condition than us, its just that we and they were not declared emergency cases and therefore are just put in line. As long as those 90% of people are there before OP, then they will still get seen to first.

In A&E you are either seen to immediately or go in que to be seen to or to have xxx equipment used on you. OP would not be considered as an immediate priority unless there was no one else there (there will be especially with the icey weather).

Walk in clinic is quicker

If you're a northerner run it off, if you're a southener get yourself over to Switzerland to get treated (will only need transport one way) :)

you need looked at. go somewhere that has xr facilities.
your calcaneus is not a pleasant thing to break. if you have pain squeezing both sides of the heel (not the sides of the sole bit of the heel, a wee bit higher than this)at the same time it could be fractured. if it is just pain on the underside of the heel it could be fractured, but more likely just bruised)
unusual mechanism of injury - normally it is fall from height onto heels causing #, but i see the odd one from just going over on your ankle. it is a common window cleaner injury.....

I've got to agree with Dowie. It isn't life threatening, he isn't in danger, it's not serious, therfore don't need to go to A&E where more important cases need to be seen.

Walk in clinic is the option. Just because it is called ACCIDENT & emergency doesn't mean I'd head to A&E if I accidentally paper cut myself, or accidentally broke my nail. That argument is a bit silly.

Hey.

I'm back. A&E Was empty. I was booked in a seen within 10 mins.
I was then prodded, and yup its painful.
Anyway, Xrayed it, and i chipped the bone (Tiny chip). Hence the swelling and pain.

Was just told to take some Paracetamol alongside my Codeine and it should heal sooner rather than later.

People saying i was wasting A&E time... well that's how i felt, until i was seen, xrayed and out within 90mins! It was a 5 min drive away. Now I'm back at work.
