should i install windows 7 on my hard drive or SSD

Thank you the reaper guy

Ok so 120gb SSD is big enough cheers, I was going to go for a 250gb samsung isit called the 840 evo or something. But if 120gb is good enough then il save my money.

Yes im thinking of just installing my os on my SSD

All my movies on 1 hard drive, as I have lots of these and they take up lots if space so for tgis il be buying a 2tb hard drive. ( im guessing as the os is installed onto the SSD I will have to redirect it to my hard drive location for my movies is that correct

and another 2tb hard drive for my documents, programs, picturez, music etc. I know I wont need 2tb but its handy for future. Then obviously I just redirect all these folders too am I corect

Can I just ask. As il have well in total tbh 3 hard drives. Isit advisable to put these into a RAID mode if so which one would work best with SRT

If you're only putting the OS onto the SSD, then you could get away with a 60GB instead, however I do like the extra 60GB for programs/games.

Default the OS will want to use the C:\drive directories, you can just point these to the folders on your new HDD's, so D:\Movies (whatever you call it) & E:\My Documents, E:\My Pictures...(etc etc).

In your circumstance, RAID won't be useful, mainly because you will be seperating everything, if you setup the 2 x 2TB HDD's in RAID 0 for instance, it will technically show as 4TB on one HDD. This is faster than them singularly, but if one fails, then they both lose the data.

If you wanted to protect your films/documents then you'd need another HDD to put into RAID 1 which if one HDD fails the other will have a clone of it and no data will be lost, however this is quite expensive.

Just noticed that the 3TB Toshiba is on sale and at a good price if you want even more storage!

YOUR BASKET
2 x Toshiba 3TB 7200RPM SATA 6GB/s 64MB Cache - OEM (DT01ACA300) HDD £79.99 (£159.98)
1 x Kingston 120GB SSDNow V300 Drive SATA 6Gb/s 3 2.5" (7mm height) Solid State Hard Drive - (SV300S37A/120G) £73.99
Total : £245.38 (includes shipping : £9.50).

23ll il just get the 250gb samsung evo and install my os into it and leave the rest of the space for the cache.
But should I partition the SSD first them install the o2 or shoulf I just leave it and install the os normally

And so its recommended for my 2 x hard drives to put these 2 in RAID 1 so its more secure as I dont want to lose data
Also I would have ny old hard drive as a spare so I could use this as a backup drive. Should I just plug this one in and use it as a storage device

The thing with RAID 1 is that the cloning is instantaneous, which means that if a virus gets in to one drive, it will immediately get into the other. If you accidentally delete something that you later realize you needed, it will also have been deleted on the other. Not to put you off, just be aware of the pros and cons.

An alternative is to not employ RAID 1, and simply copy or clone to the second storage drive manually whenever you feel like it.

By the way, when installing the OS on the SSD, it's best to only have the SSD plugged in. Then add the other drives later.

Hope someone can answer the rest of your questions.

IMO, all games and software (and obviously OS) should be installed onto the SSD.

I think for me out of 238GiB - 140GiB is games, and 45 GiB of free space.

If you're going to get the 250GB don't just leave something 221Gb waste away! Make good use of it, the benefit of using it all for cache will be less than using it for games anf software.

Going on from the above, for the sake of simplicity and security have seperate drives. They rarely fail, if you have essential items that need to be backed up, do so online or use an external HDD.

Ah right ok. No worries so il install my os and programs I use most on my SSD
Just not sure what programs I use most. Ol probs just install my games for now

Thank you for all your help I really appreciate it. Canmot wait til I can finish my pc build nw.

And yes il leave all my drives as seperate ones

Hi yes I just got one more question

My motherboard is the asus sabertooth z77 and it has

2 x 6gbps sata brown

4 x 3gbps sata black

Connection. Where should I plug what into which connection

Im guessing my ssd into one of the 6gbps and maybe my program and document hard drive into the 2nd 6gbos

Then my movies and backup drive into a 3gbps slot

would people agree with me

best thing to do is partition your ssd so leave about 40GB for you OS and the rest for anything else you might need, SSD boot and shut down will be a lot faster.

That would be the most sensible way of doing it.

Yep arnie, yove got it sorted that way. AHCI in bios for your windows install on the ssd. All the other stuff on a secondary hard drive. But if you are coming from an old system that has important data on the hard drive. Back it up, things like documents, pics, music etc. I tend to back up things like photos and music to an external hdd. Yes im a wee bit sentimental about my photos lol. But for a new system just stick the os on the ssd and enjoy. Im off now to look at old photos from my school days.:D

yes what il do is install my os onto my SSD then connect my x 2 2TB hard drives im buying and then connect my current hard drive (1TB in my system using now) and transfer all my photos, music, documents onto one of my new drives
Transfer all my movies onto one of the 2TB hard drives as il be using one for just movies
And then I just format this 1TB hard drive and use as a backup drive

I know how to direct folders etc to point to my new hard drives etc but iv never actually done it

My question is and it might sound stupid but as I am not installing an o/s onto any of my hard drives, how does this ppinting folders work. As the new hard drives wont have anything on them when I buy them will they

Or when I point to them would they just automatically create these folders on that particilar drive

Sorry if this is a simple question haja

On one of your 2TB HDD's create the same folders as you'd expect to see:

My Documents
My Pictures
My Videos (Although this might be your other 2TB drive for your movies)
My Music
Downloads
Any extras etc.

Then when you open Windows Explorer, right click the directories on the left, click properties and you can then set the location.

Windows 8/8.1 has a nice feature in place under location where it will automatically move all the current files into the new location, and update the game registries to point to the new location.

Not sure this feature was ever added to Windows 7, but as it's a fresh install, the location of games/program files won't matter as they won't be installed yet.

Remember that when installing programs they will default to install on the C:\ Drive (Your SSD) so remember to manually chose where you want the program/games to install, even after merging folders together.

I used to have my OS installed on my 1TB Samsung SpinPoint F3 with a 40GB OCZ Vertex 2 as a Smart Response cache drive, and now I have a 256GB Samsung 830 as my primary drive which has my OS and programs on it and the 1TB is now for games and storage.

To be honest I haven't noticed a drastic speed increase.

for games/programs you wanna install to the storage hdd instead of the os ssd

just create a folder on the storage hdd, then when installing the game/program click custom when it prompts you, then point it to the newly created folder and that's it

Hi I recieved my SSD todayjust to let peopld know yes its the samsung 256gb evo 840,
Im just waiting on the arrival of my two harddrives I ended up ordered 2 x 1tb instead as I dont think il need 4tb haha,

just to confirm should I raid the two hard drives or keep them seperate. Whats peoples view on it.

Also im guessing I need to
1) just plug in my SSD and install my os

2) connect my two hard drives

3) connect my current 1tb hard drive and transfer all my pictures, music and other documents to one of my new hard drives and my movies to my new hard drive I rename for movies
4) format my old hard drive and maybe keep it for backups lol
