Should i sell my PS3?

Come on, whats with people these days

no need to be like that

maybe i should have asked if there are any worthwhile games coming to PS3 also.

I was going to reply to this thread sooner, but like most threads on this forum it gets ruined by idiots or people who don't have the capacity to understand that everyone's opinions are different to theirs...

To help answer your question from your intial post I would say yes sell it, as you don't use it and need the money, but before I recommend that I would like to ask a simple question and that is what games do you enjoy on your PC?

The reason I ask is because if you like RPG's or say RTS games then you really won't benefit from keeping the PS3 at this time, where as if you like FPS games and driving games then you may enjoy what the PS3 has coming exclusively to it in the near future with the likes of Killzone 2, Resistance 2, Motorstorm 2, Socom: Confrontation & Wipeout HD?

If you enjoy gaming online then you will probabley enjoy the above titles as they seem to be offering some excellent online options with the like of Resistance 2 coming with 60 player online & 8 player co-op as well as a single player story and 2 player offline co-op.

As I said it really comes down to what games you enjoy, and if you can clarify that we could give you a better idea of what might appeal to you and ultimately whether it would be worth keeping the console in the longterm..

If you got £300 for your PS3 you could get a BluRay and HD-DVD combo from OcUK fot less than £80. You'd still be able to watch HD movies and be £220 better off.

Don't forget the £40 software to play it back too. Plus I would not sit down and watch a BluRay disc on my PC, I don't do it with DVD's so there is no way I want to do it with HD content, I watch DVD's to get away from my PC and spend time with others. If you have invested in BluRay discs and actually watch them then the PS3 is probably the best device to play them back on. I don't think the BluRay is the think stopping him from selling it because the players are only going to come down in price.

So connect a PC to a HD TV or a decent widescreen monitor.

Good idea, but what if your PC is upstairs and your HDTV is downstairs in your lounge?

Also from people with both I'm pretty sure the Blu-ray drive for a PC isn't comparable to a standalone player let alone a PS3? Not a deal breaker for most I'm sure but if you are seriously into watching movies I can't see most people excepting an inferior player?

Then it raises the question of noise, with most PC fans usually being fairly audible this may cause an issue?

Exactly, you would need to build a HTPC and even that is nowhere near as good a solution compared to the PS3. With the upcoming PlayTV the PS3 is becoming a good candidate for the living room media conter. I do have a lovely widescreen monitor on my PC and it is fairly quiet but I still don't want to be sitting at it to watch a movie/TV because I have to go through the hassle of booting it up and launching the program, the PS3 is a self contained player. People are different but I like watching certain content on a big TV whilst sitting on a comfy sofa.

I built my PC in this case a while back now.

Antec Fusion

It's silent and would look great under anyones TV. I also have put a BluRay Rom DVD rewiter combo in it.

Nice and agreed it would look good under your HDTV but at £123 + a blu ray drive, + the required software (+ carriage?)you wouldn't get much change out of £300 (cost of a PS3).

Anyway the OP said he only had one Blu-ray film and has never played it so tbh I don't think he brought the PS3 as a Blu-ray player in the first place?

I can barely hear mine from the sofa, plus y'know I like to have the volume turned on when I watch movies.

Are you having a laugh? PC's support much more file types than a PS3, yes they need more configuration but nothing touches a PC for a media device.

Once again you don't need to build a HTPC, a normal PC case is fine and the fan noise should not be a problem, mine is very quiet when I turn the fans down (only have them up for summer) and don't start saying "but a PC case is ugly" as mine looks much slicker than my PS3.

HD-DVD/Blu-Ray combo drive for £80 + download suitable playback software (or fork out £30 odd) and job done, plug into a HDTV and sorted.

Dont want to go into list wars, but personally i think the PS3 has a lot going for in it in most of those categories.

FPS games
Well you have all the multiplatform games, Rainbow 6, Call of duty etc plus some potentially excellent exclusive games, Resistance 2 and Killzone 2. I know its not quite a FPS but the new Socom game is out in October and MAG (256 player online battles) out spring/summer 09

MMORPG
Sony have a 3 game deal with ncsoft, to make some mmo's for the PS3, but no news as yet. Also the Agency, spy based action rpg, DC universe and free realms all coming out in this fiscal year.

Adventure / Platforms games
Well Ratchet and Clank is a pretty good action platform game, Uncharted kind of falls in the adventure side of things, Littlebigplanet is a platform game but with endless possibilities down to the creation mode. There are also Sly Cooper and Jak and Dexter games to come from their dev teams.

Sandbox games
Well again quite a few mutliplatform games here Saints Row 2, Mafia 2 and Prototype. There is also inFamous which is a PS3 exclusive from sucker punch its a sandbox game a bit like a more story based super hero/villan crackdown.

Like i said not list wars just showing games that the op may not be aware off.

The point I'm making is that my PC is not in my living room and I wouldn't want it to be. When I need to use my PC for gaming or work I don't want to be sitting on my sofa, I want to be at a desk.

My argument was the PS3 make a much better BluRay player compared to the PC, I'm sorry if that wasn't clear.

Once again you don't need to build a HTPC, a normal PC case...

As above, if I already owned a PS3 then having to build a HTPC (or another PC in normal case) to playback BluRay discs would not be the best solution. The argument isn't that the PS3 is better than a HTPC because it's not, it's that it's a better BluRay player.
