Should I send my GTX460s back?

I have bought two GTX460s and I am really disappointed with the lack of performance increase.

Don't get me wrong they are great cards and will pump out about 10500 points a day which is great. However I find that they have had the knock on effect of making bigadv units almost impossible to complete and if the do complete they are taking a lot longer - PPD drop from 28000 to around 15000

A net increase of 8000 PPD I hear you say, well not when you take into account a couple of 8800GTs pushing out 10000PPD with the bigadv unit running

It seems to have been a real waste of time and money and I think I am going to send them back as they are not giving me the increase I thought I'd get

****Edit***** They were delivered on 31st Aug so I have 7 days after the day of delivery to tell overclockers I want to send them back - That will be today

Sounds like for you they're not great but for me, I hope to replace my broken 9800GX (only one card works) with a 460GTX using a fraction of the power. You may also have not seen that OCUK just decimated the price of these things. I just ordered the OCUK 460GTX for £99 +VAT!

Thought I might get a few people voicing an opinion - never mind

If your interested I've decided to keep them

I have changed the GTX460s for the GTX260s in my wife's machine. With the GTX260s the CPU is pulling 25000PPD :)

However this has caused a problem as I can no longer connect my wife's machine up to the TV - see this tread - Any thoughts greatly appreciated

If you really are dissapointed with them send em back or you'll forever be asking yourself should i...what if etc.
If the gtx260's are ok getting you 25000pd great get another 2 and get rid of the 460's, bonus of being able to connect tv to wifes pc then! :)

Well no offence but, why would you upgrade to a 460 from a 260?

What did you expect, triple fps? Assuming it's the 768mb version, it's a $100 budget card, if you want to see a real performance increase then cough up the money for a 470 or even a 5850.

Or just wait until your 260 is obsolete, which it isn't.

OK - You've not got the whole picture. The GTX260s were cascaded to my wifes machine to replace 2 8800gt cards and the GTX460s were eventually put in my machine. I expected to see an increase in PPD from my wifes machine and a small increase from my machine.

I swapped the GTX260s for the 8800gt s before purchasing the GTX460s so my rig ran with 2 8800GT cards for a short time. My disappointment has come from is changing 2 8800gt cards with 2 GTX460 cards results in only 2 or 3 thousand PPD difference due to the fact GPU3 has such a major impact on bigadv

However now that I have swapped the cards around again (2 GTX260s back in my rig and the GTX460s in my wifes rig) PPD is much better - no more whinging from me!

The problem I now face is descibed in the other tread that I thought you guys might be able to help with

Personally I'm buying a 460GTX because the points per watt is extremely good. Those two 8800GTs draw a lot more power than your one 460.

Don't get me wrong

As a card for folding they are brilliant if you are not running bigadv. If you are (and in my experience on a i7 920 @3.8GHz) then GPU3 has a huge detrimental affect on bigadv to the point it is hardly worth upgrading.

However if you don't run bigadv or you run it on a i7 with 6 cores and if you can afford one definitely buy one as with a lazy overclock 850/1700/1800 @ 1.087V you'll get almost 11,000 PPD

I just rebuild my home machine, and running a bigadv with one GTX460 dropped about 100PPD

I've solved the technical holdups with weebeastie as well (remember some watercooling parts only work when fitted in the correct rotation) and hopefully will get that up again in the next day or so.

Any chance of you buying a second?

Unfortunatley not :), I'm done buying gfx cards for a while. (haha famous last words) Got 4 GTX 470's in weebeastie and a 460 in this one. Also keeps the power bills down. Oh I was tempted for a while to get a 4870x2 for £125 in the MM earlier but no.. I'm saving for a 970 or 980X now, selling what I can to raise the funds to swap out my 920's

Is it when you add the second 460 that you take the really big PPD hit, i fold with 1 and one i7 and i dont notice a points drop off..

Its interesting that you as well as Biffa see hardly any or no impact with one card. I didn't think to test with one card (anyone would think I've never worked with PCs!!) - If I get time this weekend I'll give it ago although its unlikely as I'm going here

I've got 4 x 470's already, they suck too much juice for me to add more and the 465 sucks more juice than a 470 as standard

Also I think its the Fermi GPU3 client that is causing problems with more than one card and bigadv. But I'm gonna do more tests when weebeastie is up.
