Should I stay or should I go?

To start with, a little about my current situation.

I earn roughly the national average salary, but I'm in a role that doesn't challenge me and I don't find particularly exciting. At present there appears to be close to zero chance of career progression. However, the job does come with a very nice defined benefit pension and has excellent job security.

What would you do in this situation - continue plodding along, taking all training opportunities that come available and hope the progression situation changes or actively look for a new position with better pay and advancement prospects, but without the same level of security and pension plan?

Your current position isn't the only job with good pension benefits and job security, for example I work for the NHS and it offers the same benefits but with plenty of opportunities to progress. With the recent NHS pay increases, even on the lowest band, you'll be earning far more than the minimum wage.

At the very least, in your position I would try to decide on what career path to choose, determine what qualifications are needed and work on achieving those.

You’re in the excellent position of being comfortable whilst having the ability to apply for anything that takes your fancy really.

Even if you just attend some interviews to get a grasp of what different positions may be like it’ll help keep you on your toes.

Have a think about a career plan and what you need to develop it. That way you can work towards opportunities and evaluate them when you find them. You may need to move outside your current company / organisation and that is always a risk but on the plus side you have a stable situation to move from and are not forced / rushed. Also make sure your skills and experience stay relevant.

How old are you? How long have you been in the role? Are you planning to have any "life events" in the future (get married/have kids)?

Thanks for the advice. The general theme seems to be stay put, work on development and actively look for a better role with the same benefits.

For info, I'm in my 40s, married a few years and kids are all but grown up. Been in the job 10 years and had one promotion 6 years ago.

You may die before you even get your pension so don't live your life by just that.

Nothing wrong with looking around, seeing what you're worth

What is your job now? What did you come from? What are your motivations? (more challenging/technical/management etc or money?)

Motivations for change are the thing you need to look at. Comfort is a tough thing, as we then fear change but it can be the best thing. You just have to be doing it for the right reasons.
