my original ps3 is getting on a bit so does anyone think I should trade it in for the new slim model?

was in hmv today and they said i would get 90 for my 60gig ps3. not sure if this is a good price or not, opinions?

also, i see that the 320 gig has faster blu ray, what exactly does this do and does it make much of a difference?

Apparently, the deal in the shop was 250 for 320gig ps3, uncharted 3,battlefield 3, fifa 12 and new need for speed. i only want uncharted so could just trade the remaining games in. it was £25 for fifa and £17 & £16 for BF3 and NFS.

so thats 90 for my ps3, 58 for the games that come with and i also have assassins cree revelations to trade in so im probably looking at spending 80ish quid, only problem is that it will be store credit.

cheers for opinions:)

what is the point? your current console could last 1 day or 100 years, i still have my 60 gig launch console and its fine, i upgraded the hard drive to 500gb though.

i like it because it has 4 USB ports and the memory card slots too.

none of the new ones have these and only have 2 usb ports.

if it did fail, i would most likely attempt a repair myself using youtube videos, or send it to sony for repair.

these 60GB versions are worth a lot more than other fat versions because they also have backwards compatibility which other's don't.

they are now getting rarer and rarer, when the PS4 comes out, if it also doesn't have backwards compatibility, then these PS3's could become worth a small fortune. depending on the demand for them.

I've still got my 40gb fat PS3. Still works fine. If it breaks, I'll just ebay it as faulty and buy a slim. Although if it was to break in another year, I may just stick to the Xbox 360 untill the new consoles come out.

Those with Uncharted 2/3 and fat PS3's... do the Uncharted games send the fan into overdrive now and then? I'm trying to find more ways to cool the PS3 40GB when playing those games.

The console isn't overheating but if I can get the Uncharted games not to send the fan into overdrive, it would make a difference.

Tempted to strip it down again and fit copper memory heatsinks... I also read about copper shims for the Cell/Rsx... maybe drill somemore holes as well at the back where the fan is. It's the only two games that sets the fan off. Once the fan is full blast it's cool air exhausting within a minute.

Nope, recently played through all three Uncharted games on my 40GB and it was fine.

Personally i'd keep it as it's more useful and has more USB etc. than the new PS3's. It might also become rare as a load of the 60GB models have been getting the YLOD so yours could be an antique in a couple of years time! :p

What was the room temperature? Uncharted 2/3 sets off the fan so easily on mine. Starting from 20 Celsius and it's well ventilated, cleaned out, new paste tried both Arctic Silver 5 then IC Diamond. It's never overheated, or any YLOD's.

Even before the fan kicks in, checking the back of the console (feeling the metal vents) isn't even roasting.

how many of you guys have opened your consoles up then?

is it easy to do and clean out? i've never done it because ive never had a problem, but it does get awful dusty in my room and the console is always covered in dust, so im thinking with the many years ive had it, it could do with a little spring clean.

so you guys got any tips or specific videos you can link to?

its pretty fiddly, just buy a can of compressed air, turn it on and spray it into the intake air vents and it should blow all the dust out,if you break the seal it voids warranty

which ones the intake? and which ones are outakes?

lol, ive never checked, plus im well out of warranty, it's a launch day console.

i think it sucks air in at the side or front and exhausts out the rear? does on a 60gb model but the fan will blow any dust out later doesnt matter where you point the nozzle

It's just time consuming due to all the irregular sized screws.

Only it doesn't. It can't get the dust balls out of the nuke and crannies. Even some got inside of the motherboard heatsink chamber. The only way to get those out is a full strip down.

Thats if it's already out of warranty. Since nearly all fats will be.

Yes, it's the same on the 40GB. Lower front and side intake. All rear exhaust.

its up to you if you want to open it up or not,you need a special screw/hex bit to get access to the hdd, then unscrew it pull out and slide cover off, then undo loads of screws all varying in length so remember which screw goes where, then you prize apart the plastic shell and it leaves mb/psu/blu ray drive all attached in one bundle, dont remove the ribbon cables though, you dont need to go tht deep into it

dust wont make much difference anyway, its just a bad design to begin with, they get too hot and go pop, good job ati/amd is designing the ps4 chipsets/cpu

You still have to. The paste is poor after a year or two. Goes either milky or like dried out ceiling filler. This was when I noticed the fan kicking in more playing Uncharted 2 back in April last year...

Goes pop how? I've never had overheating problems. Even holding your hand anywhere on the plastic base of the console or power supply area, the unit isn't even hot. You're lucky if it's luke warm after an hour.

Sadly as I said above, since I've striped it down twice last year I still can't get Uncharted 2/3 to stop it sending the fan into full speed. Only games it happens with but the fan does ramp down after 10 - 15 minutes while in game. Rinse and repeat. Though Uncharted 1 never ever sent the fan into overdrive.

go pop as in ylod thats due to cpu getting too hot n ive gone off sony completely,i loved the ps1 and ps2,still have them and they still work, but ps3 is terrible regarding reliability so now i stick to pc for gaming,i dont think ill bother with consoles anymore

As I've said, I've never had the YLOD as the console is still running well from no overheating since Christmas 2007. It's even ran well through summers with the room being 28/30 celsius since I have no air conditioning.
