Hi folks, just wondering what your opinions are on uprgading my E6420 to something like a Q6600. It's done me really well and is still running like a champ, but would I notice much difference moving to a quad or something? Any recommendations? I know there's no guarantees, but is it likely to be as easy to get to 3.2Ghz as the E6420?

Yeah a Q6600 will do 3.2ghz with little effort.

But if you're happy with the E6420 then keep it.

You reckon I'd notice much difference going from E6420 -> Quad core? Mainly use the computer for gaming, but also a fair bit of development (Visual Studio 2005) and a little image editing, etc. Plus all the usual stuff.

No definitely not wait for penryn then pick up the q6600 quad for £100 ish new £70 2nd hand it's already at £160-£190.

yea i will be rubbing my mits when it hits £100 just like my E6300 was and run em both at 3gig ah the joys of overclocking eh :)

Good-o, will do then.

EDIT: B T W though, you think it would be worth it when penryn is released and the prices of the Q6600 do drop?

If the Q6600 goes to 70squids 2nd user the lesser dual cores (below C2d 6600 spec) will be free yippee, can't wait ;)

Ok maybe £70 2nd hand is optimistic but i can definitely see the new price at around £120 in january if the q9450 penryn is going to be around £160.
The q6600 95w is already available for £160 new so is it that hard to believe that by jan it will be £100 or there abouts? 6600's are already only fetching £70-£80 second hand.
I'd be lucky to get £60 for my 6420, i have seen 95w q6600's go for £140 so when penryn comes the new quads will be around £150-£180 i think so stands to reason the current q6600 will drop in price massively.Wasn't that long ago a few months an E6600 would cost you £130 second hand.
It all depends on the price of the q9450 penryn they say $316 but what it will be here is anyones guess the old non 95w q6600's are losing resale value all the time so i expect the same to happen with the 95 w editions when they are superseded.

Yes the cpu market is in for a severe shake up, If the new cpu's are launched at such competitive prices which would lead me to believe the suggested prices at the moment are quite optimistic.

I wouldn't really bother, personally. Wait for 6 months and see how things are then.
