SHOULD I UPGRADE MY 4850?

I too have a (Sapphire) 512mb 4850 and looking for an upgrade but am thinking of saving up for the 6xxx series cards and getting a 6870 or some good card like that.

RAM prices are stupidly high due to retarded mass production of them, I had a 4gb HyperX set for 40 pounds last year and they are 75 now. Insane.

Personally although getting another 4850 and crossfiring them, will give you good performance, for a small price......

I would rather sell the 4850 and get a 5850.

The 5850, is a powerfull card, plus your getting dx11 and support for tomorrows technologies (latest shader model etc etc)

I'v promised my self never to bother again with multi card set ups.

Your save your self a lot of issues by just going down the single card root.

Saying that tho, supposedly the 5770's crossfire rivals the 5870 for performance, but is the same price as a 5850.......

Seems the 5770's crossfire perform on par with a 5850 / 5870 depending on the game.....

I still say go with the 5850, and you remove any issues associated with crossfire.....

Choice is yours.

But what issues does crossfire actually cause, apart from more power consumption? I like the option of flexibility with the 5770, because I can buy one now and another any time I like, rather than save up to buy the 5850.

Well buy 2 X 1Gb 5770 then surely!

Thats what I thought.

However, the cards dont operate like that. Basically even tho you have 2x 512mb ram, the cards, only ever load 512mb of textures, as the ram is split between two gpus and alternated........

Its confusing, but too have 1gb ram in a crossfire set up, both cards need to have 1gb of ram.

Im sure, the 5770 crossfire set up will still be a nice set up.

Additionally you may even realise that one 5770 meats your needs and then you would have saved money, for the next time you want to upgrade.

If you can, get a 5770 with 1gb ram. If not, im sure its wont matter too much.

The only problem crossfire causes, is the need to rely on ATI to update the crossfire profiles.

where as a single card set up, will work much better out the box.

Plus no microstuttering issues.

hmmm, Iv just noticed that the 4850 also have 800 stream processors.

The 5770 will give you 1gb ram, faster memory and dx11.

If you can sell the 4850, then it may be worth getting a 5770.

Also would be nice to get the ram up to 4gigs.

Especially as your running win7 64bit.

About the graphics cards..... I really dont know how much more performance a 5770 will be from a 4850.

Your need to check out some benchmarks for that.

If you can get a 4850 mega cheap, get that. (like £40)

Other wise......... 5770, 5830 or save up for a 5850.

Alteratively, wait till the end of the year, for the 6000 series from ATI.

Thats what im doing.

Actually, im running a card that has the same performance as your 4850, and im gona wait.

Iv got a 3870x2 (512x2ram) but the card only recognises 512mb ram.

Its adequate for now, for gaming. Im playing BFBC2 at 1920x1200 on medium, with no issues.

I can confirm that you need to upgrade to 4GB of ram. I had to run Win7_x64 for a few days with 2GB while my other 2GB was being replaced. Boy, did it make a difference, things slower to load, slower response all around, it was like getting a nitrous boost when I got it back to 4GB again!

For what's it worth my WEI for ram is 7.4 with 4GB, it dropped to 5.5 with just 2GB.

Get 5850, with xfire setup you can run into issues, although more and more games are supporting it fully nowadays.

I would get more ram, especially with 64 bit OS you have, and DDR2 can be had really cheap these days.

quite the opposite ddr2 cannot be had cheap these days

Sell the 4850 whilst it's still worth £40-£45 and get a 5770 and add another 5770 later on.
Or get a 5850 but personally I'd be all over a second hand 5770 looking to get another later and get 5870 performance for around £200.

You are looking at £20 for 2x1gb sale and 2x2gb ram is going to cost you £50 minimum.

Ah but I bet you won't be saying this when it's time to upgrade the 5770 ;) "Why should I get another 5770 to Crossfire when I could just get an XYZW which won't have Crossfire issues?" :D

EDIT: yeah, isn't a 4850 almost the same spec as a 5770? Same amount of shader processors, similar clocks, similar memory bandwidth...just twice as much VRAM (which is undoubtedly useful at high resolutions)? So you'd be paying over £120 for a slight upgrade...

Trust me, when I say, sticking another 2 gig of ram in your pc, will be worth while!

Its a 64bit O.S, windows on its own uses 1gb of ram, leaving only 1 gb for the game, and even now days, if you look at the back of games, they are slowly starting to creep up with the ram requirements.

Im sure 2gigs of ram can be had fairly cheapish.

On reflection, I wouldnt bother with the 5770.

I think your be a bit dissapointed with the performance difference from your 4850.

If you must have a card now, that will give you a boost in performance but not cost the earth, then maybe a 5830 is a better option?

Additionally the 6000 series will be here by october/November.......

So something to think about.

Im sticking with my 3870x2 like I said before, and thats only 512 ram and I play at 1920x1200!

I definitely think that if I get the 5770, I will crossfire it, so it's really whether it's better to just get the 5850 straight off or the two 5770s - I know that I won't see a huge difference between 4850 and 5770. Also isn't it cheaper for me to keep my 2gb ram and just add 2 x 1gb, or would it sacrifice performance?

you could try and get another set of 2Gb reapers or onces that match the same specs as your reapers
