Should I upgrade my RAM

Hi all.

Just wondering if I would benefit of grabbing a 16GB ram kit. As it is I have an at least 4 year old set of XMS3 Corsair 2x4gb paired with another 2x2gb set for 12gb ram. All is fairly aged. I was thinking about grabbing a 16gb kit at a decent price. Would it be worth it at all?

Any help would be really appreciated.

IMO you gain very little with faster ram, I would also be very surprised if your using over 12gb ram. I would put money on you seeing very little if any gain unless your ram is seriously slow.

Cool. I was curious because my RAM is just so old, wasn't sure whether that was a concern.

You would be better IMO to get a SSD if your still using a mechanical drive, you will see much quicker performance day to day than by replacing your RAM.

Its hard to know although I find windows 8.1 seems a bit of a hog and on my laptop when it had 8GB of RAM it was using over 30% of it in idle. Upgraded to 16GB with a set of Corsair Vengeance DDR3 SODIMM 1600Mhz I got from OCUK and it now seems smoother to me. Mind you I also put in an SSD and a new i7 CPU so hard to know which had the bigger impact.
