Should I upgrade to conroe?

quite frankly i upgrade all the time(though thinking back i've had a 4400+ since release, longest i've ever had a single cpu to date :p ), i do tend to do a lot of intensive cpu work and i do see an ok boost from some upgrades.

really you have to be honest with yourself, are you a gamer and do lots of rendering, encoding, intensive design work or are you just a gamer who spends the rest of the time surfing the net? if you have a decent cpu now you won't see a lick of difference upgrading to conroe in games. the oblivion and fear benchmarks from 19/20 sites don't increase at all at the realistic resolution for whatever card is being used in the tests. only one website from one guy who afaik doesn't seem to do official reviews anywhere says different.

upgrade if you use anything more than 20 mins a day which properly maxes out your cpu and means you're waiting around for cpu to finish something, if you aren't then you won't see a increase in performance. tbh, a lot of people will jump from a single cored ath 64 to a dual core conroe, it will feel faster in desktop general performance. the extra core/threads just flat out make multitasking faster, but you'd get that responsiveness increase in performance from a $93 805d aswell.

i'm not against people upgrading though. i find the benchmarking willie waving all a bit much tbh, but i do enjoy having new kit to play with and have upgraded purely for that before. i also find it costs nothing extra to constantly be upgrading. for instance, average joe decides to buy a top end gaming rig for £1800, and finds its crap after 2-3years and buys another one. i upgrade something every 2-3 months but the resale value of my old stuff is far higher. by the end of 2-3 years i've probably spent the same or less, but instead of having 2 year old kit, my stuff will all be up to date right the way through the 2 years, still have resale value, and i'll always have the fastest kit around. it doesn't cost anymore really.

I'm also considering upgrading to either Pentium D 805 or Conroe, please check my rig. (I would also have to change my mobo)

I have also been thinking of getting water cooling, should I just go for that and pump up my setting a little.

Cheers Guys

OK,

1. So which conroe to go for and which board? Rough costs?

2. Or should I just hold fire for something thats maybe coming in the future?

3. Would water cooling help my rig perform any more?

4. And if so, which one and rough costs?

Thanks guys (nobody expects the Spanish Inquesition :D )

I've been dual priming for hours with 100% CPU usage and also running iTunes, IE, Firefox with loads of windows opened at the same time. And it doesn't feel slow at all. I have to say Conroe is amazing, with my old rig Opteron 170 I couldn't do anything at all when dual primed. Intel really got it right this time, their multi-tasking is surperior to AMD's. No matter what people're saying it's not worth it. IT IS. I don't regret one bit of my move to Conroe. ;) Go for it, you will always have mixed opinions but I did it and never look back.

Conroe would be the only worthwhile upgrade for you if you wanna notice any performance increase.

just gone from an old 3.0 dual core (ok not that old but one of the first ones)
huge difference in performance in everything. easy and stable to overclock with air. i can't want for anything more at the moment. i was undecided for ages but am glad i did it when i did. if your undecided just go and upgrade i guarentee you won't look back!!!

What are you waiting for ............ A64 3200+ & 9800Pro ? No need to be convinced. It's time for Conroe :p

So true.

On my Opty 165 @2.7 whle playing any recent game the 2 folding clients virtually stop.
On my E6300 @3.15 rig they hardly slow down. :D
Think it's a combination of faster cpu AND much better multitasking.
This is without a doubt the most noticable performance upgrade I have ever made. (and believe me I have had a few since my 486sx25) ;)

I really see the point of me upgrading. I only built my machine March this year :D

Last May
You have all the reasons in the world. :o

The difference in games from my A64 SD 3700 at 2.6 is amazing. all other hardware stayed the same and Res is 1600x1200.
i use this as well
Swiftech H20-220 Apex Ultra Watercooling Kit
with the Gfx cooled and by this wekend the chipset as well.

I've been toying with the idea & if I'd had £300-400 "spare" cash I'd have done it by now but tbh my current rig does everything I ask of it so it's not worth my while to upgrade.
I don't believe there's anything out there right now that I would run that will need that sort of power so if I did upgrade it would only be to mess around with overclocking.
When the next batch of next gen games comes out I will think about it then.

(actually I'm only jealous cos I'm skint)
:p

You could get a decent price for yoyr kit if you sold it on the bay, then the upgrade is considerably less.
