Should I wait for the new CPU?

Hi

I've currently got no PC and have best part of £1k ready for a brand new build, really really don't know which of the below to do :-

1- Q6600 now
2- E2180 o/c then review in Feb/March, prob go QX9450
3- Wait altogether til QX9450 in Jan/Feb and do without for 4-6 weeks

Option number 2...thats what I'm doing. Gotta say, in no rush to upgrade, this chip is so fast!

Come next year no one will want a Q6600 G0, just like no one wants the B3 Q6600 now.

Think of it this way, Q9450 at 3.6Ghz with stock cooling, or Q6600 at say 3.4Ghz stock cooling. Add on the performance difference and the 3.6Ghz Q9450 equates to a 3.8/4Ghz Q6600 minus the need for an aftermarket cooler - If my experience is anything to go by!

If you are into extreme overclocking then the Q6600 will still be a good bet, for everyone else get the Q9450.

I had the same dilema, building my exiting computer into a new case with a 8400GS just to run Vista Aero and Media Pc duties.
Just ordered a E2180 to go with a Maximux Formula. Watercooled this should run 3.6-3.8Ghz with the 10x multi (max out anything I'll be using it for). And checkout what the Penryns Quads are doing price /performance wise. Looks like the Q9330 is not going to make a stable 3.6Ghz with a 7.5 multi and the 8 multi Quad looks like it may be over £200 (even thats going to need a 450 FSB which is looking a bit flaky on Penryns). Shouldn't lose much more than £25 when it comes to selling a retail E2180 on eBay with a long warrantee remaining.

I was in the same boat, bought a brandnew Q6600 G0 and almost ordered Maxmimus Formula SE but then I changed my mind and sold the Q6600 yesterday. Was making excuses like SSE4 is totally unnecessary , Penryn is going to be just a bit faster, not much of a jump from Q6600 bla bla bla but if you lot all think about it do you honestly care? I bloody don't, :D I want the latest processor and a shiny new mobo with the latest chipset. The cheapest quad Penryn is probably around £200 compare to £160 of Q6600, not that much of difference in price. Waiting is definitely worth it ;) you don't want to be resentful towards your system do you :D

gotta say I don't see what I could use my PC for that a 3Ghz+ Q6600 would be to much of a slouch at? But I guess the latest tech is always tempting :D

Option 2 sounds so tempting with a nice overclock on the 2180, but everytime I weigh it up I should just survive an extra month without UT3 on my p.o.s pc. (I really want UT3 to fly high frames when playing 5on5 clan wars without looking like ****!:D)
