Should Next Gen Consoles Offer Mouse Control?

Must say, I'm mighty impressed by the hardware on offer for the price these days. The only thing stopping me is that I hate playing a lot of games with a standard controller (apart from driving and some platform games).

I have an xbox, but have been disapointed by many titles because they feel so clumsy with the controller.

I firmly believe that a more accurate control system would breath new life into console gaming. Surely the gamer should have the option? Any thoughts?

The trouble with a mouse system is that it requires a desk in front of you - something that doesn't really equate with social, comfortable, living room gaming. You can't really have a mouse on the floor without sitting a very odd position, and having some kind of desk in front of four people for multiplayer doesn't work at all.

You could use a trackball I guess, but those aren't really any more accurate than a control stick really.

I think that's what Nintendo are aiming for with the Revolution though. The controller's built in positional functions should hopefully allow you to have a brilliantly responsive control system, and that's why a lot of people think a good FPS game could be excellent on it (either using the controller as a light gun, or using it to turn and aim by moving it independently of the screen).

YES YES YES
Please, please support USB mice and keyboards with FPS and RTS games on consoles... PLEASE.

Having said that, even if they don't, I'm still thoroughly enjoying the X360 :)

No, not unless a game specifically NEEDS one.

The beauty of console gaming is the level playing field. Everyone has to use the same equipment.

Well, I've been an FPS player on PC's for years and always scoffed at playing an FPS with a joypad.

Playing through CoD2 on the 360 has changed my mind a little bit, the controls are a joy to use and I really didn't miss using a mouse and keyboard playing this. I might even go so far as to say it was more fun!

As to wether making a mouse usable on a console would breathe a new lease of life into console gaming, I really don't think so. It would also make the playing field uneven in multiplayer games if some people were using a mouse and some a joypad.

It might be a nice addition for RTS games if any were to appear on the next gen consoles but I'll have to agree with what's been said so far.

What he is saying is it is more enjoyable on the xbox, which it is regardless of running like a dog. and it is a level playing field as everyone has a controller.
Big vote for no on the mouse front over here.
Its not what consoles are about.

i have PDZ and the thing that puts me off playing it more is the controls its too inaccurate give me a mouse and keyboard and i would enjoy the game nearly 100% more.

For web browsing yes, but for FPS games no, as that could / would give a massive advantage and cause an uproar on live, as with what Nismo said, it's a level playing field, and you don't want to ruin it for all those people who play with pads.

Plus, I'd say the majority of people would be playinf from a sofa or seat, not a desk, so a mouse would be totally inpractical also.

I did (before thinking about it) think "OMG no mouse of keyboard - how will I have my 1337 aim on FPS's!" but you know what? so what if you dont have pin point accuracy with the mouse+keyboard combination that you would get on the PC, everyone is using exactly the same controller and its a level playing field as Nismo says. Deal with it and enjoy the game :)

I feel the same as the majority so far in this thread - level playing field is the best way forward. Mice are also impractical in the living room environment. Can you imagine four people sat on a sofa with mice and keyboards?

I remember having this debate on these forums when the SmartJoy Frag (or whatever its called) came out for the Xbox, except there seemed to be more mice-fans present that time around!

I have played many people in halo2 that have proven to me that you can have pin point accuracy using a controler.

There is no need what so ever to have a keyboard/mouse for anything other than internet browsing tbh(if it comes out).

do you know why people whinge about not having a keyboard/mouse?? its because they are sore loosers! Put in the time and the practice and you will find there are no huge problems playing with a controler.

(BTW PDZ simply has terrible controls get COD2 if you want good controls)

Krono, there is no question that mouse+keyboard is better for FPS games, that isn't the issue. You'll find that FPS games on consoles have less strict aiming requirements than on a PC which is why it might seem like a pad is okay. If you played a fast twitchy FPS like UT2004 on a pad, against other users with a mouse you'd get murdered.
