Should OCUK forums go subscription only?

You'd still get idiots, ill-informed know-it-alls and show offs. The point is that money is not a cure for moronitis.

It would be a decent place to get informed opinion without idiots bragging how good their spangley new gpu is ..... we need a no bull section and if making it a subbed members section i would be up for it
Because there are many many more sites offering "informed" opinion that you could go to without paying, but hey, if you want to throw your money away carry on. lol

how would people ask for advice though?

Same way they normally do only with a subsc based section at least we know it would not descend into kiddy tantrums when the flamers get going.
Sure you can ask whatever question you want in the regular forum guides but i would hope it might be a lot more relaxed/friendlier in a subscr section .... dont shoot the messenger just an idea.... :)

I think Oxy will come to realise that we arn't the problem rather he has out grown the forum. We all get old and grow up. I've found myself losing interest in the forums but I can just move on and be happy.

I think the ocuk forums should go subscription only, say access for 30 days for £4.99

NO!

They were built to be free of use, they grew fast because they were free, you start charging people and things will slow down.

Maybe a one off payment, but £4.99/month is too much.

On a different but related note, personally, I'd rather at the very least that you must be logged in to view the forums. When someone is banned/suspended they still have the 'benefit' of the forum but just without posting rights simply by logging out.

would hardly call that a benefit. Not being able to slam down the nerps makes reading the dribble they type 10 times less interesting. 40% of the stuff typed on this forum especially (GD) is definitely not worth reading let alone responding to. Pretty sure most people who get banned intentionally get banned because they are bored and want to see how "controversial" they can be or just how far they can push people.

That Said one of my co-workers changed my PW to the forum whilst I was on holiday and I did miss GD a little bit :o

Ontopic IRT #1 NO what a retarded idea. The OcUK forums are an opportunity for customers to engage with both OcUK and fellow customers, be it through news, hardware discussion, Support or anything else that Users have in common with the staff and customers. Forcing people to pay to be involved is Arrogant and elitist and will certainly not benefit OcUK as a company.

Plenty of services have started out free to build up a user base and then started charging once they have acquired enough users and 'publicity' to believe they can sustain it. Some with more success that others (Minecraft seem to be doing well for example, whereas Friends Reunited, perhaps not so much). Often what happens is that free access remains but is restricted in some way with the hope that people will upgrade to 'premium' accounts.

The "slow down" as you put it isn't necessarily a problem if a big enough userbase remains intact to bring in the $$$.

You may eradicate the spam posters and "morons" but you will lose the personality of this forum and the basis from which it has been built up from.

many morons have far too much money more money than sense but yes you may wipe a few off.

Its a poor idea as has already been said many times.

But there is one point I didn't see when I skimmed through; growth would almost completely halt and the forums could only go backwards. No one is going to pay to join a forum that they don't know anything about and there will always be people leaving.

The only people that would join the community are friends of those already here, and this is unlikely to be a huge group.

Don't even know why I bothered with a serious response... :p

It's a funny idea, we could end up like saints web which has about 9 people that troll each other (decending into horrible personal attacks) who all pay the fiver a year sub, then everyone else picks about with 3 free posts a day for useful information.
