Just to confirm guys, even if the motherboard is set to run from the internal GFX. If an external GFX card is in the correct slot and powered, the machine should still load the bios and post?

Yes absolutely

Ok thanks, been a while since I had onboard GFX so wasn't 100% sure if was having issues or just being stupid. 99% sure there is a problem with the motherboard so will do some final testing when I get home tonight but most likely RMA the board.

Anyone know if it is best to send directly to gigabyte or RMA to OCUK?

I would RMA to OC UK. Now lets try solve the problem. Get an ASUS board!!!

Only joking.

If you post more system specs it would help us assist you....

What I would do is. Clear CMOS. Battery out for 20 mins, Replace bettery one stick of RAM furthest socket from CPU,power connections and Keyboard and mouse no PCI Ex graphics no nothing. Try to post with the monitor connected to the internal graphics. If your MB has a post display note the code it stops at and post back here.

Thanks for the response mate, here is a C&P of my post from the hardware section:

PC Spec:

Intel Core i5-3570K 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £154.16
MSI HD 7850 Twin Frozr III OC 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Cards
Samsung S24B300HL 23.6" Widescreen LED Monitor - Black
Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
OCZ ZT 550W '80 Plus Bronze' Modular Power Supply
Toshiba (7K1000.D) 500GB SATA 6GB/s 32MB Cache - OEM (DT01ACA050)
Xigmatek Pantheon Mid Tower Case - Black
GeIL Black Dragon 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit

When I power the PC it won't go to the bios if the GFX card is being powered. Doesn't matter if any monitor cables are connected or not. I have to remove the power cable from the GFX card before it will boot.

So I can get to the bios via the motherboard on-board GFX. I checked the settings and tried disabling on-board graphics, hoping this was overriding the GFX card but then I was unable to get to bios at all. Had to clear CMOS and then start again. I have tried both HDMI and DVI on the GFX port.

Currently installing Win 7 using the on-board graphics and then will try installing the graphics drivers once in. Worried though because obviously I cannot even get to a bios screen when the GFX card is powered currently.

Sorry for the rambling post been troubleshooting for ages

and then my update:

Tried GFX Card in old PC, works with no problems.

Tried disabling onboard Graphics on the new system and setting first load option to the PCI Express slot. Still nothing on boot. Won't even show bios. (Also tried the secondary PCIe slot.

Posting this message from the new PC, onboard graphics etc all working fine.

Make sure all your PCI EX connections are plugged into the board.

Set primary graphics to PCI EX and force this to run Gen 2.0 if possible. Sadly I am not familiar with that board I only support ASUS ROG boards but these would be the first steps I would take.

Also as another option you should inspect the pins within the socket making sure they are all correctly alligned and make sure your cooler is not overtightened and warping the board in any way. Remember all PCI EX lanes are now controlled from the CPU so even one pin not touching correctly = Big time fail!!!

I was extra careful with the board, I didn't over tighten any of the screws, the chip fitted snuggle in place and the retail cooler for intel actually slotted in like a charm, I didn't have to force any of the legs. Very slight pressure and they all clicked into place.

The ATX 12v has power as well as the standard board power. The gfx card only requires one single 6 pin connector, unless there is somewhere else on the board that requires additional power.

Only thing left for me to try is update the BIOS and then like you say, try forcing the board to run from PCI EX and disable the onboard graphics again.

A bios update is the next obvious item to try.

Try also forcing that slot to run PCI gen 2 instead of Gen 3.

If you have it try a generic monitor of lower res too.I know my 7970's dont display Bios on my Hazro or Dell 30 Inch I have to plug in a 20 inch monitor to show the UEFI Bios screen. They do display in Windows though without a problem.

The options I will have:

Init Display First
Specifes the frst initiation of themonitor display fromthe installed PCI graphics card, PCI Express graphics
card, or the onboard graphics.
Auto Lets BIOS automatically configure this setting. (Default)
IGFX Sets the onboard graphics as the first display.
PEG Sets the PCI Express graphics card on the PCIEX16 slot as the first display.
PCI Sets the graphics card on the PCI slot as the first display.
