Should Unreal Engine be 'put out to pasture'?

It's not so great when it comes to facial expressions on characters (the "smile" in Mass Effect 2 being one noticable example). Not very good with larger numbers of models on-screen either. Then again that might be poor implementation on the part of developers.

i thought bulletstrom had very good graphics and the AA is probably the best i've seen in recent games tbh

Was about to say the same thing. Bulletstorm is a prime example of U3 engine done properly. It runs insanely well and looks really good.

UE3 is annoying when developers use it badly, but games that use it to its potential look and play great.

Arkham Asylum, ME1+2, Bulletstorm, Gears are prime examples of the engine being used properly.

The Unreal Engine is very very easy to use and work with. If you have a single programmer with knowledge of something like C++, UScript is easy to understand and Kismet simplifies things even more.

I completely agree that it seems that mostUnreal games have that same feel about them and are easy to spot, but this is not down to the engine choice. Its down to the developers. I bet most people here could tell if a game was made in Unity3D, CryEngine, UDK or Source.

Source games even pre source Valve games has the same feeling.
Unreal Engine games they do and can feel different eg sanctum v Mass Effect don't have the same feel. While global agenda does feel a bit like Mass Effect.

I suppose what gets me the most is Bioshock 2. PC game released in 2010, and the quality of the textures is just shocking, not to mention the jaggies if you don't force some sort of hardware AA.
