Show me your tropical fish

my dad's tank has been given to me (only an 18" - hes getting a bigger one) and im gonna re-set it up, completely clean it, re-arrange plants etc and get me some cool little fishies :D

in the past, ive taken an interest in the fish, but not really learned how to clean it etc, suppose a bit of reading and its all easy peasy with a bit of care

im a fan of Pleccies - dad's been hunting for the dwarf ones for a while, but nowhere local enough seems to sell them :/

Picture of my bedroom tank, a 24*12*12 that's been set up for 2 months, and contains 7 Black Neons, 4 Otos, and 3 Ghost Shrimp:

You can't see any fish in the picture - I added a better filter 2 weeks ago, and I think the increased waterflow has caused them to hide in the plants
more. Although as they get used to it, they do tend to venture out more.

And another shot of one of my shrimp:

One more pic, an Oto:

Going to have to get my little brother to look after this tank next week once I've gone to uni . I'm sure it will be fine ;)

I've always wanted an aquarium, nwo i have some space in the living room i might actually be able to get one. Do you need to keep them out of the sunlight? I saw a really nice marine one with corals, aneomae etc and a couple of "nemos" that looked really nice. Is it an expensive thing to get into?

can get very expensive as with all hobby's its down to how much you want to spend. Best to keep tank out of direct sunlight as it encourages algea to grow more quickly, on mine (pictures on previous webpage) all the algea is on the rocks non on glass and i only have to vacuum the coral sand and clean the glass once every 2 weeks which is when i do a 40% water change also.

can you get silent setups? I would like a tank again at some point but i always seem to remember that the filter makes lots of noise and also the sound of water splashing (obviously depending on the type of filert you have)

You can get very close to silent setups. My dad's barely makes a sound.

Mines' pretty silent only noise you can hear is the oxygen being pumped into the tank and making it's bubbles.

mines silent cannot hear anything, its down to the filter quality, if you get a external Eheim Professional Filter which is about £100 then it'll be silent, unless you go for air bubbles also which require some sort of pump, but yes the filters are silent these days more so the more expensive
