Because I'm in a gay mood here is my beautiful MBP case I received today, totally awesome right girlfriends? :o

Oh and also my engraved iPod Shuffle the little one!

Anyone realise that the 'dock' is actually a USB to 3mm jack lead? I find that very strange.

Yes, has been for the past couple of generations.

Hehe I know, I again realised this on the way to work the following morning because the previous model is basically the same but with a little dock.

Its all to do with those 3 rings around the 3mm connector isnt it? I just never realised they could be used in such a way.

If thats the case how come other devices havent utilized it? Would save space (as shown on this device) that a 'dock' connector isnt needed.

Well, there's 3 conducting points on a standard headphone jack, 4 on the iPod Shuffle's one. My guess is you could just basically make an extension of the USB signal since USB only has 4 connection points. Obviously the iPod would have to know what was going on and such to be able to do this but Apple have clearly done it.

The reason why the dock connector is used is 1. Apple get royalties from any other company using it :p 2. You can send so much more information over it such as "TV output, audio input and output, and remote signalling, such as "play", "pause", "rewind", etc.". Quote thanks to Wikipedia ;)
