How long should this normally take?

I've a Samsung F3 1TB HDD which I wanted to split so I can put Win8 on.
Currently has 540gb of stuff on it with 391gb free.
So I've gone to Disk Management -> Shrink Volume. And it's been there a while, so a bit worried as to whether it's crashed or something :p .

It doesn't really depend on the amount you're shrinking by, it depends on how much data is in the area you're freeing up.

If there's hardly any data to move it should be fairly quick, if there's a lot of data to move it could take a while.

Reading from and writing to the same disk isn't a quick process.

If I've done this once I've done it 100 times ...sometimes it's quicker and sometimes its slower.....but it shouldn't be taking too long ?

It depends on what he's doing.

If there's only 1GB of data on the space he's freeing up it won't take long.

If there's 100GB of data on the space he's freeing up it's going to take some time to move from one part of the HDD to another.

Right thanks for the heads up, I was under the impression that it was the size of the shrink but now you say that it really makes much more sense.
