Friday evening I got hit from behind at an island, person behind me managed to out accelerate me and knocked me forwards.
Swapped details and she said she'd rather pay than go through insurance.

At the time it looked like a folded bumper.

Got home and the rear cross member is fully split through the middle. :(

Gutted because I don't want a long drawn insurance claim (and dont want to be out of pocket whilst I wait) and am a bit worried that the quote will come back fairly huge because of the damage.

Please poke fun, offer kind words or humerus related poo through letterbox comments.

Firstly you absolutely have to report this to your insurer. It's part of the conditions for your insurance. If you wish to settle the matter privately, you should tell them so and that you 'do not currently wish to make a claim, but reserve the right to do so'.

Secondly, offering to pay cash right at the start, before an inspection, sounds very dodgy indeed. She may well not have insurance.

Not necessarily, she may have had a bump before & seen her premiums go through the roof then seen the OP's bumper and thought that it looks like a cheap repair job.

Humerus reply as requested. ;)

Also, if it's blatantly the third party's fault you shouldn't have to endure too much inconvenience? Like for like hire car, full repair of your own vehicle etc? Shame about next year's premium though.

Get a quote for the repair and see how much it is. If she's willing to pay then get the money and take it to a garage. If not go through insurance.

Personally I'd be on the phone to HelpHire/Europa/the like and have them deal with it. Get you a hire car, zero cash out of your pocket, much less time wasted. I understand doing a nice thing by paying cash but it's just not worth the faff to me.

People think repairs will be £50, you'll do a load of running around getting quotes and she won't be able to afford it.

Phone your insurer now.

Absolutely this ^^
I've been shunted twice in the last 10 years and both times the person that hit me has initially wanted to avoid going through insurance, and both times they have had the expectation above.
The woman who hit my A8 in a car park really did think it would be £50-£100 to fix the damage. The actual bill from Audi was over £2k.

Absolutely ring the insurer.

Just think how many times you've enquiries about prices to repair cosmetics and ended up thinking FFS.

Just to sort the paint out properly after a knock can be many hundreds of pounds.

I'll ring the insurers today then. I had a funny feeling at the time she didn't understand the depth of the damage she had caused with you all mentioning the above.

She's also destroyed my reverse cam so that is now getting added on. Fingers crossed a millionaire hit me who just happens to drive a non-flashy car.

Small update;

My rear view camera is also broken :-(

Just called the insurer, thank you to the guys who said to call them because I didn't know that I did have to report it to them.
He seemed doubtful the 3rd party would pay, his comment was a bumper costs enough from a main dealer never mind a new cross member as well.

They have a claim filed but set to pending, I only need to pick the phone up to let them loose if needs be.

I've emailed the 3rd party today and sent pictures of the damage and stressed that the car isn't safe because of this. Not particularly expecting a response until I send the quotes tomorrow.

Don't claim through your insurer, they'll take your excess whilst they progress with recovering costs.

Go directly to the 3rd party insurer and let them do the legwork. Things said, if they start playing silly buggers wih her not admitting the obvious liability, then either go back to your insurer or contact a clams management company like Europa consultants to push it forwards.

Avoid the agro, I did this a few years, got hit, the other party admitted liability and then begged me not to go through insurance. What a ball ache that turned out to be, firstly they wanted me to take the car to some mates garage who basically turned around and said yes they could repair the car but the paint won't match. It then turned into a farce with the other party insistent hat his mate would do a proper job.

Never again, don't care how small or big, always go through insurance to avoid the agro.

Oh and surprised nobody has asked - but was she fit ? :D

Do not use your insurer. Either use a third party legal company, helphire, europa, etc, or contact their insurer.

My insurer push all claims through a 3rd party anyway and I have motor legal cover so no cost to me at any point.
Well get quote tomorrow and post it up. Already got quote for reverse cam at 250

Never do any cash deal with the third party unless it's just a cracked numberplate, light or suchlike - it's just bound to turn into a saga.

I always use Sytnerdrive claims assistance these days.
