Earlier today I did a software update on my Mac Pro which it has been asking me to do for a while, but I have just kept putting off.
Fast forward an hour an it has been sat on the default desktop background for about 50 minutes after it finished installing etc.

I waited another half an hour just in case and nothing had changed, so I held the power button down to turn it off.

When i restarted, my desktop background image had been changed to the default image and the start bar across the top of the screen was invisible, which just an outline of the spotlight icon visible.
Finder would say "the application Finder can't be opened. -10810" when I click on it and nearly every other app wont load.

Eventually, after a few forced shutdowns/restarts the start bar showed up and some software would load, but it seems random as one minute it will work and the next time it wont.
I also cant restart/shut down properly from the start bar as it just sits there doing nothing after I click it.

Have I totally screwed my Mac, or is there some way to fix it without doing a complete fresh install?
