my pc shut down today after running prime95 for 1hour.

it has a stock cpu cooler with no overclock. i was curoius as to how hot it would get.

my cpu was runnkng around 59c when it went off (AMD x3 8450)

i tried to start it again and the fans kicked to life yet the pc wouldn't boot up.

i turned it off and on again and it sprang to life.

was this due to the heat in my cpu or is it possible my PSU is not very weel too?

is this cpu fan any good?

arctic cooler freezer 64

i have limited room in my case so the smaller the better really

Thinking again on the subject, the fans kicking in momentarily is possibly just excess voltage stored on your PSU from powering down...

The PSU not powering up the mobo is a sure sign there is something wrong, given you have just stress tested your CPU could be a coincidence. You can unplug everything except a memory stick and the CPU and a motherboard will still boot if there is not a fault with it ( onboard vga is helpfu, if not plug the Graphics card in tool ;) )

You have an issue with something, just need to figure out what it is, hardware list may enlighten us :D

thanks guys, the hardware is as follows

AMD x3 8450
GF8100V-M5
GeForce 7300GS
the PSU is a HIPRO model HP-D3057F3P

i have a tsst cd/dvd rw
a dvr 216-r
an IDE HDD
and a sata HDD
+ 1 x 92mm case fan

is this too much for this psu?

300W is a low power these days for most modernish PC's, looking around your's gives out apprx 285w max, not sure on the ampage on the 12V line though, but a good idea is check the sticker on the side where it shows the wattage and ampage for the relevant rails.

I'm still inclined to think it's the PSU though, unplug the HD without your OS on, the case fan, any excess memory sticks ( if your doing a small Prime test ) and your DvD drives and try the stress test again.

Just used a calculator based on what you've put and the recommended power supply needed is 265W for average running of your PC, so you're close to the max on this with the HP-D3057F3P (285W max )

Any chance of borrowing a bigger PSU to try a test again?

i ran the prime95 test again, and my pc shut down again...

i reckon my psu can'yt hack it.

i uses the power supply calculator and came out with 324W which is more than my psu can put out.

i forgot to add i have a wirelss n pci card installed along with a couple of usb devices...

a new psu is on the cards... what;s a goos one on a budget?

i'll be needing at least 2 x sata connections preferably 3

thanks
