I have purchased a SN45G second hand but there is a problem with the motherboard and it wont post. (board is a FN45) Do i need a specific board to go in the case as it has a built in cooler or can i just go ahead and buy any ITX mobo?

nope, you would need another shuttle motherboard, and depending on connectors etc it would have to be the same family :(

Thing is its a old socket A motherboard so i'm having a lot of trouble coming across a replacement, been searching everywhere.

Try US suppliers, inconvenient I know, but folks on US forums seem to be able to get replacement motherboards.

I'm thinking about getting a different motherboard and not use the built in cooler, i'll just try and fit a after market one. Only thing is every motherboard i can find is 17cm x 17cm and the one i have at the moment is clearly a rectangle, so i'm a bit worried about compatability.

If it's suffering from the Fans of Doom issue, you might be able to it working again with a new BIOS chip.

Hopefully someone else here can provide more information. Replacing the BIOS would beat having to source a new motherboard, if it’s just the BIOS preventing boot.

if your lookin for a new board then look for flex-ATX. thats the size shuttle use

also there used to be the odd one or 2 on egay but dont know if they are now

generally you can't buy them. BUT there is one shop online that sells them as spare parts. can't link ya to it cos of competitor rules. the only downside to it is their quite expensive and in a fair few cases its cheaper to just buy a whole new shuttle

That is one other alternative. buy a secondhand cheap better shuttle and swap the boards over or something. thats what i did. i now have a black SN45G (stealthed drives etc) with an SN85G4V3 inside it :)

What exactly is the Fans of Doom issue? I'm new to SFF, when i power up all the fans spin and the motherboard light is on, just no Post/Beep/display.

I doubt now that an after market cooler is gonna be viable as there is literally no vertical clearance.

lol i have been looking everywhere for mini-ITX, what a doofus. Thanks

It's a phrase coined by another forum for a problem associated from messing up the BIOS by a bad flash, etc.

The system refuses to post, and remains with a black screen with the main cooling fan running on full.

There's no POST beep codes in Shuttle's for troubleshooting.

You could try clearing the BIOS using the motherboard jumper. There is also a hold down the Insert key while powering on trick, but I don't know the specific instructions.

Lets hope that it isnt completely dead because the V2 suffers from "vdimm death"

The problem is if you increase the vdimm voltage, it kills the board and it wont ever boot again. If a bios update was done then the vdimm option would have been removed and it could be something else causing it not too boot.

iirc, thre were reports on "that other forum" that increasing the vdimm was fine until you dropped it back down to normal settings. thats when it died lol

so if you had it increased and still working then great until you clock too high and have to clear your cmos, dropping it back down to stock and death

however if you have a V1 then vdimm death aint a problem :)
