I'm looking for some advice on something I want to do but not sure if I should.

I'm in thought about getting a Siberian husky. I've always liked dogs but never been down the avenue of owning one. The only real dog that I thought I would've liked to own is a Siberian husky. It was always something in my mind but never thought I'd do it.
Out of the blue; my cousin's fella has a husky who is pregnant and looking to drop in the next 8 weeks. They've offered to give me one as a gift, as they know I have always had it in my mind.
I'm now strongly considering it, but the only problem is I have a 5 year old cat. She is really a dope and is really friendly but nervous around new people. It's not her I'm worried about really. It's the husky I'm worried about.
I've been reading on the internet about them, and read as they are 'natural predators' they do kill smaller animals such as cats.
My hope is that the husky can be trained not to attack, but then I don't really want to risk leaving them alone together then returning and finding my walls covered in cat guts.
Has anyone any advice or has any huskys and cats living together?

This is the only thing that is preventing me from saying 'Yes, put my name down for one!'

Thanks peeps :)

One thing, don't get both a husky and a cat.

Huskies are known to be affectionate for many years, and then suddenly turn and kill the cat. So i've read/heard anyhow.

And a husky will need walking everyday when their jabs have been done :)

Also they are very fluffy dogs, and will moult so much you have to hoover your stairs and carpets everyday to keep sane :).

Here's our trio of trouble. (quite a few pics)

Everything I've read and been told suggests that its a very bad idea unfortunately. I have consulted a lot of advice on the subject too, as I would absolutely love my own little sled team of Huskys!

Those dogs are cute as hell :D

Can I have one please?

All mine :3, they love the snow as well, will hopefully have some decent snow-walks this winter :) as shadow was too young to take out for long periods of time (shes just shy of 14 months atm)

As for the OP, here's some links to help you :)

http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/siberianhuskyfaq.htm

Gives you some information, however i am not an expert but my mother is a volunteer for Huskies In Need, and S.H.A.R.E; Siberian Husky Aid Rescue and Education.

S.H.A.R.E are just starting up, however H.I.N have been around for a while.

This is a forum my mother uses, Husky-Owners. They have hundreds of daily users so this would be the perfect place to gain any extra advice, as well as food and gear you will need when they grow up :)

The photos aren't helping! It makes me want one more!

Yeah, things that I have read about cats with huskys it doesn't seem such a good plan which is really a shame.

I'm not sure if it's something that huskys can be taught and can get along really. At the end of the day it would be a risk I'd be taking with the cat and dog together, and I'm not convinced it's a risk that I want to take.

It's blood hard!

Indeed, they also recommend getting a companion if you only own a single husky.

As for the pictures ;) They really are beautiful dogs when they want to be, as shadow gets too much into herself and digs holes out in the garden, makes a massive mess and her paws are covered in mud and dirt etc.

One this is many people who own a husky recommend a well trained daily routine, as well as having set meal times so they understand when everything is, allowing them to settle in.

If you do get one, get him/her chipped when possible, and invest in a good quality harness as they love to pull ;)

The links are actually quite helpful. I will need to have a proper read through. My problem is I want to take the risk, but if anything happened to my cat because of the husky I'd never forgive myself for taking the chance in the first place.

Ive had my husky since 11 weeks old and so far i have managed to train some of the natural traits out of him regarding the hunting instinct etc, but i would still not trust him to be left with a cat.

Huskys are funny dogs, ive had all sorts of breeds and so far, id say Huskys are the easiest, but i know im in a very small majority who say that, honestly, i would listen to the horror stories because they're are a lot more of those around:p

Awwwh :)

If i can, i'll get a picture of next doors cat :).

Sits on our shed roof and torments our trio, Marley wants to kill it though :(

He gets frustrated because he can't get to it :p

The trick is to get a cat that is about the same size as a husky, because the desire to kill each other cancels out when they are the same size.

A small/female Snow Leopard or a large male Ocelot should be suitable.

nah you need an alaskan malamute :P
