:D after this the 4870 needs to be clocked :D

The reason i stoped at 3ghz was temp issues i was hitting mid 70's.

I have droped the multi and upped the FSB also managed to drop the voltage

Now I am going to Lap the heat sink and CPU.

The nickle base of the TRUE

As you can see not very level.

SNC00103.jpg

After about an hour of lapping ether the base is very hard or i was doing it wrong as it took ages on the 220 grit paper

Started with the 600 at this point.

Good old jack to keep me company.

Not the finish i was expecting but it will do for a first go :)

Now for the CPU

Finished CPU again not perfect but i have spare paper :D

The finish was not perfect but after 6 hours of lapping my arm was tired so i though sod it thats enough. can always come back to it if it will make a diffrence.

End result

Now iv managed to get up to 3.5 but im stuck again now :(

My room is like a furnace atm so probably not the best time to be ding this as temps are in the 70's again :(

Man everytime I see this done it makes me want to do it more and more. But really to be @ 4ghz and have managable temps it's probably best to leave it alone. But still who is not tempted by cooler temps...:D

I think the only way I would do this is to go try to find a used D0 stepping i7 in a few months. My question is if neither the cpu or the cooler is completely flat, is it more harm to lap only the cooler or is that still a plus?

Also I wonder how close a good lapped cooler and cpu could come to watercooling? Surely a push/pull true lapped and cpu to match would come close you would think.

grrr cant get it stable at 3.5 not even with 1.3v think its got somthing to do with mem. going to lower the multi see if it is the mem

testing at 7.5 x 412 = 3090mhz @ 1.3v core temps @ 74c :(

3.6Ghz needs 1.4V with my E7200 and 3.8Ghz needs 1.485V

Temps will be high no matter what cooling you have as the CPU isn't soldered to the IHS but they used a TIM, the E8x00 series are soldered and usually have a lower temperature and therefore can clock a bit higher.
