Now that i'm edging closer to buying a Sigma 100-300mm F4, i'm wondering about how exactly it attaches to a tripod.

Will it just attach to the screw like a camera?

What's best with this lens, to attach the tripod to the camera or to the lens?
Thanks!

I presume, it will have a thing around the lens, which you screw into the tripod, if you screw the tripod into the camera, it wont stay still becauses its long, so i would imagine that there is a connection thing around the lens, which i have forgot the name of.

There is on the 70-200 f/2.8

There is a lens tripod mount fixed to the back end of the lens and that will accept a screw thread to either go directly onto a mono pod or onto your tripod by screwing the tripod plate into it and then locking it onto your tripod. Unless its a cheaper tripod that only offers a screw also like the monopods.

So does the lens come with the collar on the bottom AND a tripod plate?
Or does the tripod screw directly onto the tripod collar on the lens?

My tripod in a Manfrotto 724B with a Ball head.

If its the 100-300 F4 then yes it comes with the ring and a hood (nice sigma)

It wont come with a tripod plate. That is something that your tripod would have come with.

If the tripod doesnt support a plate then yes its as simple as screwing it into the lens ring.

example of plate and ring.
