Sigma 50 1.4 Art release date for Canon

That's an impressive review, gutted it's not an 85 or 135 as even on a crop I rarely use below 55mm :(

I think it's fantastic that Sigma are bending Canon over. Hopefully they will get their act together especially on pricing.

Dpreview confirm a UK RRP of £849.99

It appears to be a very nice lens and I really do like the styling of the new Sigma lenses - but.

I've never found much use for my Canon EF 50mm f/1.4, sure its nice and fast but I've always considered it a ho-hum lens, I've got it but I could certainly live without it. 50mm just seems one of those neither here nor there lengths.

To put it into perspective financially, you could purchase ten Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 or two Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 and have £261 left over (which is almost enough to purchase a Canon EF 85mm f/1.8!) for the price of the Sigma. For another £400 you could purchase the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2!

That said, it is nice that Sigma have seriously upped their lens technology and research and given Canon and Nikon a run for their money. These two companies are clearly going to have to do something to keep on top of the game.

Or get the 35mm 1.4 Sigma instead and have over £200 left over for something longer than 50mm to satisfy the range where 50mm feels neither here nor there.

Whilst I agree in part that 50mm is "neither here or there", there is a use for it.

I am a BIG advocate of the 35mm focal length, especially on prime, way before the Sigma 35mm came along, it has been to Rome, Hong Kong 3 times, Florence, New York, Atlanta, Scotland, Prague, France, Ireland, and about 40+ weddings, It is one of if not my favourite lens. I love it and will continue to be my go to lens. However, to 50mm's credit, there are times when 35mm is too wide and 85mm is too close. When using either of those lenses feels like it is a compromise on composition. That's when I usually get out the 50mm.

I also love the 50mm on the dance floor pairing with a 24/1.4. A 35/85 combo on the dance floor is not wide enough and too long. 24/35/50 is perfect.

Besides, I already have a 35/1.4, 85/1.2…not bought a lens since December 2012….getting an itch for something new to play with :p

Excited. The 35mm was £799 RRP wasn't it? 50 should drop similarly to maybe £650 or so before too long which I don't mind too much. I probably won't actually pick it up immediately as it'll mean having to take the big bag out with me whenever I shoot (at the moment I can fit a D800, 35, 50 and 85 into my smaller bags), but I'll probably pick one up over summer at some point - I'll find an excuse to treat myself.

C'mon Sigma, update that 85 so I can get a matching 35/50/85 set. :p

And a 135, and a 70-200, and a 24, and update the 105 OS Macro... Hopefully they get through the whole line before they change their design style again man a full set of their high end lenses would be so awesome.

Yeah a 135 would sort me out for virtually every shooting scenario. Long ways off until that comes out though I guess.
