Silence achieved (Finally)

The problem is that once you go for a really quiet PC you open a whole can of worms.

Next the other PCs in the household will appear too loud and they will get fixed one by one. Then other devices such as PVRs, audio systems, game consoles etc also seem too loud and you'll start replacing fans and drives everywhere.

Or maybe this is just me :D

exactly this, i spent a lot getting my antec 900 quiet even using sound deadning for cars! on every piece of metal avail !!
i still want to upgrade to the R2
but the loudest thing in my room now is my av amp i can hear the fan over the top of my pc.

Got a new samsung HDD and some acouti-pak winging it's way to me so i should hpfully be able to get a slice of silence for myself :D

I can remember going through this extremely obsessive process five years ago and eventually giving up as everything ran hotter than molten lava back then and required a jet engine to keep it cool. :D It's a sad state of affairs when we're still putting up with noisy kit though.

That said, my three very latest and shiniest bits of kit, a new Samsung HDD, a Lite-on Blue ray drive and a 5770 vapor-X are impressively quiet and since the upgrade a couple of days ago, I've found myself giving my CPU fan some very unimpressed looks.

I think I might restart my 720BE passive cooling experiments... :D

Is there any sort of tool/software that can measure the Db of a PC ?

Be cool to get some sort of noise table going lol

A SSD as a boot drive has done more to quieten my computer than anything else recently. Loudest moving part is now a 120mm fan at ~1000rpm.

You could dig around in your Bios, like I've just done and discover the the most important feature in it. Asus call it "Smart Q" and in two years I'd never paid it any attention. It turns out it's the CPU fan controller, not that the manual makes any great deal of it. :o

Now my hairdryer Arctic Cooler CPU fan has gone from thrashing away at 2500rpm, to a sedate 1100. When the new speed kicked it in I thought my computer had broken. :D

The last time my PC was this quiet was when I was passively cooling an AMD64 3700.
