Silence at work - rememberance

It's a sign of solidarity and respect, it's also a poignant moment in history at that time 11th of the 11th at 11.

I understand your point though elmarko, it's like Valentine's day, no need for it as you should show love and adoration all year round.

However, this has a much bigger implication, by all means show respect all year round (and most of us do) but this is just marking it with a specific time to actively raise awareness and remind people of that dark time in our history.

I'm markedly unsurprised that the likes of elmarko are asking for this to be a public holiday, like they are entitled to something for the ultimate sacrifice others have paid.

Just shut your mouth and remember for two minutes and have some bloody perspective.

Very impressed with my building, the tannoy announced a 2min silence with a little reading, and EVERYONE was silent, I was stood by the window (I like to look out over London to help me reflect and the view is superb) and even those busy people here at Canary Wharf stopped and you could tell that most were aware of the time.

Not everyone did, but there you go.

They set off the fire alarm in ours, without telling anyone (it seems). We all started filing out yabbering more than normal... Clever...

All 7(!) of us in the office observed it, I think I have done it every year since I can remember and always will.

Hardly. I just think it would be a greater gesture to spend a day with loved ones.

Likewise, Even remember doing it when I was Baby Indie at school :)

We just observed the silence in the office and everyone was quiet except for one pleb who continued his phone call throughout despite everyone staring at him. :o

It was only as the silence ended that he went "oh, I think I just talked through the silence".

One thing I noticed was that a lot of people were itching to get back to work, I saw people taking post-it notes to scribble something on or rearranging papers, etc. It's not all that difficult to take 1 or 2 minutes of your working day to sit and reflect is it?

Elmarko did not ask for it to be a public holiday....

Well I was in the car, Absolute Radio 80s going straight from two minutes silence into Power of Love by Huey Lewis and the News changed the sombre, reflective mood pretty sharply! :p

I'm a pacifist through and through and have issues with the all squaddies are heroes thing the media portray, however I would never not pay my respects to the dead. My grandad is 91 on Friday and his stories about being a gunner on a flame throwing tank are fascinating. Pacifist or not :p

Always in that time im always reminded of the last scene in the Blackadder, of all the flims and everything, that one always has hit me the hardest.

Well observed on my floor. Tannoy announcement for those which want to take part, minutes silence will take place at 11.

At 11, tannoy music went off, office dropped silent. No speaking, well observed :)
