friend gave me his old pc case so i decided to put my file server in it and try and quieten the thing down so i could sleep. I found the things making the most noise in my old case were the PSU and crappy AMD fan.

First thing fixed was the psu in the new case was a silent one so that was fixed without any effort

After bodging the mobo into place i took the old amd heatsink and fan off and threw it as far as i could!

horrible thing....

now my lovely intel heatsink that came with my Q6600 was sitting in the box and it looked soo much better than that amd thing! it even has a big copper bit in the middle! i thought.. hey if it can cool a q6600 it must be able to cool my little AMD!

and considering its an intel heatsink i got it on easy enough!!

i now cant hear it at all as the intel cooler is so good the fan must be at very low speeds :)

Im going to try and bunjie the hard drives tomorrow as thats the only thing that makes a bit of noise when at high speeds... hopefully it will be very silent if i manage to do it :D

i find the easiest (and cheapest) way to make your hard discs near silent is to use double sided sticky tape and stick em to the bottom of the chassis, you can easily fit 2 in in front of the motherboard so to speak. Just put very small pads of tape on each of the 4 screw holes in the bottom of the drive, put at least 2 layers of tape so it has a bit of "absorption" and stick it down.. The drives will run 1 or 2 degrees hotter as they cannot dissipate heat through the chassis but thats ok... Just use small bits of tape, as if you run a length of tape right down each side of the drive and stick it down, it'll be a nightmare to get it off!! believe me, i've been there...

Alternatively, if your computer has a dvd drive installed, you can stick one hard drive on top of that if you don't install it in the very top drive bay, one installed there will run a little hotter still as it gets all the hot air rising from the other components, but not so much as it becomes a problem.

Doing this stops all the vibration that the drive would normally send through the case and your left with only the noise of the drive spinning and accessing, and these days some drives can be very quiet..

I've tried all of the various rubber mounting systems for drives etc etc, and none work as effective as sticky tape!

cheers
