‘Silent Disco’ Help

@dowie yeah that’s right you flick between them. Just picking out a few tracks from the playlists as examples, so you can get an idea of how it facilitates variety.

Blur - Song 2
Artic Monkeys - I bet that you look good in the dance floor
Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Give it Away

Pitbull - Fireball
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis - Thrift Shop
Ed Sheehan - Sing

Journey - Don’t Stop Believing
Wham! - Wake me up before you Gogo
Survivor - Eye of the Tiger

You just hop between them as you fancy. It’s quite humorous to be dancing to, say, Wham!, and then see people moshing to something else.

Having so many songs on the go also allows you to be way more playful than with just one playlist running. I wouldn’t usually dream of putting on Slipknot or the Mortal Kombat theme at a party…. But they are both on there. People that love it will love it, others can just change the channel.

Really good. I’m a fan… obviously!

Otherwise, it’s very much a shared experience. At every SD I have been to, it results in hopping between channels to find what else is on, and figuring out what other people are dancing to. It’s particularly fun when you see a bunch of people jumping around to something and you think… ahh what is that!! *change the channel*

My daughters and their husbands have just left my house and I asked them if they had been to silent discos and they all have.
They seemed to agree it was hilarious for about 30 mins trying to guess what others are dancing to but for an all night thing a definite no.

I knew what a silent disco was, but I think it's reasonable to assume that most of us have never been to one..

Been to a couple, really cringeworthy especially if you want to take a break from it and all you can hear is loads of folks singing different stuff badly to backing music you can't hear

Done a few silent discos at various festivals around the world. Good laugh. People saying you're closing yourself off from everyone else just don't have a clue.

Keep on yelling at them clouds :P

And you've just summed it up and confirmed what my daughter's have said, a good laugh and not a serious way to listen to music.

Can't be much fun kicking the **** out of each other in the pit if you're wearing headphones. I must've been to thousands of gigs over the years, and not one would've benefited by wearing headphones. Metal is meant to be loud enough to make your ears bleed and the bass should shake the teeth from your head and cause your belly to rumble. It's as much a physical experience as it is an audible one.

Actually, tell a lie I was dragged to see 'Black' back in the day and noise cancelling headphones would've improved that experience 100%.

Lol, it was quite a good way to wind down after a hard day of kicking ass in the mosh pit… well, getting my ass kicked more like. It was absolutely not a substitute for any of the live acts and was a fun was to continue the drunken antics long into the night.

Has anyone, anywhere ever said that a silent disco is a serious way to listen to music?

Then why bother?
God knows how long this party is going to last with something that is only funny for 30 minutes :)
At least at a Festival you have 30 minutes and then go and listen to something proper.

it's a party tho, a themed party I suppose - not a music festival or gig - people aren't going to primarily listen to music :p
probably

but I'm pretty confident that every party you have ever been to has had music playing in the background or else it would be as dull as dishwater.
What's needed is people to have 30 minutes of laughing and then a fifth playlist of music through speakers for those who want to stand & chat.

Because it's fun for 30 minutes? Some people like to have fun...

I've only ever done silent discos at festivals in the small hours long after the live music has finished. The benefits of a silent disco when it comes to licensing should be fairly obvious!

and I'd do it for 30 minutes and have a good laugh, I'd be busting some shapes while listening to Thomas the Tank Engine theme, Mr Blobby and Agadoo and everybody would think I was listening to something really good.

A wild update, just to explain what I ended up doing.

I was a big fat lazy oaf and just bought the four ipods, being an exceptionally expensive way of addressing the practical difficulties. But I figured, you know what, I want idiot proof devices that (a) won't let me down and (b) are familiar to the persons that will be stop and starting the music (which won't be me).

But sweet lord has it been convenient. I've unwrapped all four and have loaded them up with the respective playlists in maybe 30 minutes, all ready to go. Just held my phone near each of them to sign in, it pre-loaded the playlists and I then downloaded them to play in 'airplane mode'. Have tested running all four simultaneously and it works like a dream. Really chuffed.

So that's one way of doing it!
