I'm in the process of putting together a home server out of old PC parts i have lying around, and the only component i'm missing is a hard drive. As the server is built around an old PIII i'm limited to IDE drives, and silence is a real issue as the server will more than likely be on 24/7.
Also i'm intending to put SuSE linux on the server, will this affect which HD i chose in anyway?
I'm currently looking at the Maxtor DiamondMax 10 160Gb model (manufacter code:6L160P0) as its the largest i can get for my £45 budget, would this be a good choice?

Samsung SpinPoint P SP1654N 160GB ATA-133 8MB Cache - OEM (HD-030-SA)

Probably the quietest HDD you can get. Same capacity for a fiver less. You could also get the 200GB model - would only cost you about 50 quid inc VAT.

Whatever you do, do NOT get a Maxtor. They have big reliability issues and most people would recommend pretty much any other drive over them.

I wouldnt say Maxtors are that bad, Ive got 2, both fine.

Cant compare noise wise to other drives, but if you use plastic grommits/washers then that should dampen the noise also. I can hear the drives, but not that much, I only know a virus scan is going on by the system tray icon.

250gb one on here is only £51, excellent drives too :)

I have a maxtor 120gb in my other system, by far the loudest thing

Agree with everything said in above post. Samsung Spinpoint have Fluid Ball bearings and are v quiet. Maxtor are very unreliable.

I have a mix of WD, Hitachi, Maxtor and Samsung drives in various pc's, the loudest is the raptor, the quietest is the samsung 200gb.

I've had two drive failures both maxtors, luckily both backed up

Thanks for the advice, i thought it was just the SATA versions of the spinpoints that were silent (i have the 250gb SATAII model, pretty much silent). Looks like the SP1654N is the HD for the job!
