Silent moderate performance gaming pc

Very difficult to get a truly silent build that's still capable somewhat. Maybe something like this? Only added a decent aftermarket cooler as the stock Ryzen one is noisy...

Case is pretty good. If it's still audible that he can't handle it, get it in a cupboard with some ventilation if possible?

I was gonna go with a 500GB SSD, but thought if he's tearing through games a lot, 1TB should hopefully keep him content to have a fair few installed to hop between. :)

May have to look elsewhere for stock on certain parts, namely the CPU and Mobo.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £662.84 (includes shipping: £0.00)

@Sparx - at the moment i think he's looking at a cheap card upgrade with perhaps some extra memory. He's thinking over his options...

If he does do a complete rebuild he already has a 1TB SSD which he could re-use and possibly his existing case - although the BitFenix Colossus M Micro ATX is cramped.

If he could reuse the above - he would have funds for a semi-passive PSU and perhaps a possible bump up to a 3600 (not crucial) - but yet to look at case in detail, but from a quick glance he could fit a quality 120mm tower cooler but may be limited in height. If a Mugen 5 would fit - that would keep things quiet and frosty (my son has one on his 3600 and rarely hear it - even then it's a whisper.)

I was going to have a look tomorrow but if you're up/about and want to play - you may want to look at the viability of the case yourself. With a semi passive PSU, semi-passive GPU and decent cooler he could probably get by with his present case and bump in CPU.

GN.

Thanks both. The case is pretty chunky as in wide, I made sure of that because the nofan coolers are very large... but the cooler over hangs the pcie very snuggly, though a riser looks like it will fit. However mounting the card somewhere that will support the hdmi cable being plugged into it will not be easy.

So, a swap to a new cooler will free up space for a fairly low profile compact but quiet and capable card. Will check out the Mugen 5 etc and a suitable card. Pretty much any card will trump the one on board.

The MB is ASUS H81M-A 4gb Ram, 1tb SSD, Intel Core i3-4130 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150, nofan CR80 cooler. EVGA 500W 80 Plus Bronze Power Supply, BitFenix Colossus M Micro ATX Case.4
You need a minimum of 8Gb of memory, too - for games (ideally 16Gb - ~£30 second hand), And, as mentioned, you could swap out the CPU for second hand i5 4690/i7 4770 (~£50) - the extra 2 cores/threads can make a big difference depending on the strategy games he plays.

Can't check over your case spec just yet - but will look when i can - but would have thought a standard tower cooler would accommodate a GPU. Depends on the plate/cover 'thingy' i noticed when i scanned pics briefly yesterday.

@BigHairyBloke re: BitFenix Colossus M Micro ATX Case

Downloaded the manual - quick scan and still no info on CPU cooler height :/

Suggest you manually measure from base of CPU up to the SSD bracket - to get an approximation.

Looking more closely at the layout it's a bit of a hot box but if the passive cooler worked an active cooler should have no issues. And pics do seem to show a squat 120mm cooler installed.

Perfect! Great detective work chaps, thanks.
So will sorce à new cpu, cooler (loads of mugen 5s out there...) and a short silent gpu card.
Steve
Really, recommend upping the memory to 8GB/16Gb (~£20/£35) too. 4Gb is the absolute minimum for Windows and will certainly be a factor in his limited performance along with needing a discrete GPU.

The cpu, where can I get those mentioned at 50£...?
We have a Members Market Forum where long term/active members can buy and sell components. The prices are a lot better than the bay (as we all know what they're really worth) and it's a lot safer too with very strict guide lines.

You have the membership time period covered but your post count is too low - i can't remember what it is, but suspect you're a few hundred off.

The bay will have ridiculous prices for the CPUs - but still worth watching auctions. But Facebook, Gumtree would be a good place to look but i wouldn't pay average bay price unless you get lucky. The price i averaged was from past sales on the MM Forum - you can even put in requests for components.

Get into a reasoned debate in 'General Discussion Forum' (they don't exist) - and your post count will soon tally up but your IQ will plummet along with your rationale and open minded views...

Advise you to delete link - unfortunately you can't post links to external reselling sites (mods get very slappy :)).

But that CPU is only 2.6GHz - possibly an engineering sample given frequency, not sure.

You can't get a 4770 for £50. They go for nearer £85, and a 4770k is more like £110.

However, there are plenty of 4690's for well under £50 - which is still double the cores of a 4130.

Yeah - must admit i didn't realise how much these CPUs hold their value outside of the MM forum when i last scanned £60 for last 4770K, or they're priced well within bundles if they eventually split. But the CPU isn't appearing very often - probably due to bay prices - but as mentioned you need that post count.

At one point i could sell my old z77 for as much i practically bought it on the bay - nuts.

As you have an H board the standard 4770 none K is all you need or the 4690 as @Bug One points out - still a big improvement in cores/threads and frequency over your present CPU.
