Just a quick question to those who own the above combo; does the Silentmaxx case stop the WD Raptor from resonating against the case? I don't really mind the clicking from searches but i constantly have to tap my case as the side panels (Lian Li PC7+) start to rattle from my HDD!

If you're looking to decouple the drive from the case then suspending it with bungee cord or sewing elastic is going to be a cheaper solution.

I had the same problem. All you got to do is have the hd sitting on foam.

well i have a raptor and a Silentmaxx and i cant hear any resonating against the case

Does it silent your maxtor completely? I got the scythe silencer and it doesnt quite manage to silence the raptor that much. Sure there is a noticeable difference but still the rattling is there.

If you still get rattling noises are still there then it means that it's still resonating the case. Using the suspension method will stop this and only the seek noises of the raptor will remain. With my raptor suspended i can't hear it's seek noises unless i have my head right next to it.

i got a raptor today and changed from a 200gb ide maxtor and finding it is quieter than that in normal use

im interested in how you go about suspending your hard drive as i have a raptor and it is quite loud, anyone got any pics or anything of how its done?

I've not got any pics to hand but I'll try and explain.

I use thin bungee cord but sewing elastic works just as well. You need to use a 5 1/4" bay to start with so that you have some space around the drive. Start by threading the cord through the existing mounting holes in the bay so that you have the cord going from side to side 4 times - twice towards the front of the bay and twice toward the rear with each pair being vertically above each other. Now rather than simply resting the drive between the bits of cord put the lower piece over the top and the upper piece under the drive so that they cross over each other at both sides. So you start with them looking like:

|======|

and they should end up like

|><==><|

The drive fits between the crossovers so it's held both vertically and horizontally.

EDIT: Beaten to it! The second link above is what I'm wittering on about.

What about that stuff that people use for car roof racks or is that to thick
That'd be way too thick i should think. I use sewing elastic which you can get from any sewing/machine shop.

where do I find bungee cords with small diameter? the ones i see on online shops dont seem appropriate

I got mine from a camping / mountaineering /outdoor type shop, they had all sorts of sizes on drums to buy by the metre.
