silly blu ray question?

I've just watched my first blu ray movie the dark knight and wondering why the picture keeps switching to and from a full screen to a letter box with black boarders at the top and bottom? is it when the film is switching from full hd to normal?

isnt it somethink to do with some of the scenes being shot in imax or somethin like that??

The Dark Knight contains a few Imax scenes, which will fill your screen, and the rest of the movie will have black borders.

so even the scenes that have black borders are in hd 1080p then, and the full screen ones are in image max, shouldn't the tv make the screens with black borders appear full when its on auto resize mode?

But surely then everything would be stretched and look stupid?

It's constantly running at 1080 resolution, just some scenes have borders and others don't, so why would your TV attempt to resize the picture?

the widescreen image (with blackbars / 95% of the film) is producted in 1080p - Imax is a much higher res whch is why it is appears full screen / without blackbars

the black bars are actually part of the image which is why tv's seem to ignore them - you would have to use one of the stretch options (which would take some picture away from each side of the image also) to fill more of the screen when the black bars are displayed (but would also slaughter the IMAX footage) - personally I think you should leave it as is, but its personal choice

It's about aspect ratios....there's already many threads in here with people thinking black bars are bad.
